Stay-at-Home Mom Going Back to Work

Hi,

I have been blessed to be a Stay at Home mom for more than 14 years now, in that time, I have run many different activities at my childrens schools, where I have organized hundreds of people, run successful fundraisers, and incorporated many different computer skills that I have along the way. Now as my children are in Middle School and Highschool I would like to find a mothers hours job to help support the family financially and contribute towards our retirement.

I have no idea how to write a resume where my professional experience was varied and ended 14 years ago. I have no idea how to communicate the extent of my volunteer efforts and what skills I gained from those experiences.

I am also terrified to even attempt this! On top of that due to my husbands job, we have been relocated quite a bit and I have made friends every where we have gone and focused on my children. Unfortunately, this move that took place 1 year ago, my focus has been on my children adapting. I am so scared to make friends again and leave them, I am not good at staying in contact with anyone, because I feel like I will have nothing to say that would be of any interest! I become more and more afraid to do anything and leave the house without the kids or my husband.

I need to get a life, but my life has been my family and that still remains my main focus, but I need to learn how to be a person again, help!!!!!!!!

Thank you

Going back to work

Hi! I was a stay at home mom for 12 years and I know just how you feel. I suggest looking into taking some college courses as a way to solidify your already impressive but somewhat undocumented (officially) skills. I am taking business courses at the local community college. I have found that the teachers are incredibly supportive of older students! I am old enough to be the mom of almost every kid in my class...surprisingly I find that many people are in awe of me. I have a life! Be proud of your dedicated past (and present) and nurture yourself. This may include buying some new clothes, getting a hair cut, etc. Take as slowly as you can afford to....all the best!!!

ADD Moms

Hi JJ:

Welcome to the ADDitude forums! "addmom" has some great advice - given today's job market, going back to school (community college or the like) for a semester or a year might be very smart if you can swing it economically. Good for your self-confidence and for meeting more people in your new community.

Here is a good article about ADD moms going back to school that you might enjoy.

The first step, however, might be figuring out your dream job" and then taking the classes that will help you achieve it. Not easy, of course, but here is a local:/adhd-web/article/606.html:"helpful article about assessing skills.

In addition, you might ask at your local library or community college about free resume services in your area. Many times, retired professionals or other HR professional donate these career services to women just like you to help them assemble a resume after years away from the work force.

Let us know what you find!
