New Med and New Hope for My ADHD Son

I have posted on here a few times about my 7-yr-old ADHD son. He was diagnosed when he was 5, and started meds a few months later. He tried the Daytrana patch, Adderall xr 5mg and then the 10 mg...each either didn't work or didn't work for long...then a few months into 1st grade his dr. tried him on Vyvanse 30 mg...it worked great through the end of the school year. Then over the Summer I noticed it wasn't working as good. When school started back I noticed the meds were not working. Not only were his usual adhd symptoms worse (very very hyper, out of control, inattentive, etc), but he started new symptoms...very very angry, aggressive, etc. He talks back and yells no matter what I asked him to do. He has spit on his brother, his pillow...he is in his little sister's face constantly aggravating her. He yells out that we should kill him, or he wishes he was never born, and other stuff like that that I never EVER thought a child of mine would say. After I take drop him off at school, there are so many morning I spend the drive back home crying because it's just so overwhelming. It is absolutely heartbreaking to hear your child say stuff like that, and feel like there is no way to help them. We have a very loving, positive, Christian home, and it just kills me to hear/see him this way. To make matters worse, he hasn't gained any weight in almost a year...and his Dr. temporarily lowered his Vyvanse to 20 mg to see if he would eat more...there wasn't a difference, so we switched back to the 30 mg. So, I stay constantly focused on him between the ADHD, and slow growth, eating, etc...he is constantly on my mind and I don't have the energy/time I should for my other two children. Anyway, we do live in a small town, and I finally had enough, thinking something else MUST be going on. So! Today we had an apt. in a bigger city with a pediatric psychiatrist...she didn't say she thought anything else but ADHD was going on at the time...but she changed his med to Concerta. Also, she prescribed Cyproheptadine, which is mainly used for allergies, etc (which he does have), but is also used for an appetite stimulant (which is why she gave it to him and something he really really needs that his regular dr. never suggested)...also, it is supposed to help him sleep, which he has trouble with. When I put him to bed, there are some nights he lays there for hours before falling asleep, I don't know if it is a side effect from meds or not, but it happens weather he is on/off meds either way, so I think it's just "him". Anyway, tonight I am filled with hope...new meds, and the new dr. also recommended a behavioral therapist which would work with my son on what behaviors/actions/reactions, etc are appropriate and how to handle certain situations...that therapist would also be able to work with me on how to handle him when he does act inappropriately (do I spank? time out? Ignore him because he has such trouble controlling himself? Run down the street pulling my hair out?)... So, my main reasons for this post was to see if any of you have had any experience with behavioral therapists, and to let some of you know about the cyproheptadine med, since some of your kids seem to be having the same issues as my son. And...last but not least, sometimes when I read a post and try to reply, I am logged in and it lets me type it out and everything, but when I go to actually post the reply it never shows up...do any of you have that same problem?

keep trying!

hi. My son who is 6 has been taking medication for ADHD for almost a year now. His doctor started him on Vyvanse 30 mg. and then over the summer we had some of the same problems that you have mentioned with your son. He was very angry and agressive, etc. We dropped him back to a lower dosage of Vyvanse and also started him on an anti-anxiety/anti-depressant medication. It was a hard enough choice to start him on the stimulant medication and then I felt horrible for putting him on something else, but it worked. The only thing changed once school started back up was that we put him back on the 30 mg. of Vyvanse because it was wearing off towards the end of school.
