ADD and Struggling

I think I need an ADD coach. Are there actually coaches who go to your workplace and help you figure out how to fix your problems? How do you afford to get a coach when your insurance doesn't cover it?

A coach

The only way you find a coach is to get in touch with your ADD local community , if they have one in the area. As far as affording one that is a whole another side to it. Most of us ADDers find someone who is actually a friend or family if we are in a jam with our organizational skills. I prefer paying my teen or someone to organize my files or room. It is really who and what you are comfortable. I never saw a coach go to work with anyone and I'm not really sure if any boss would be comfortable with someone else other than the person they hired to do the work. Unless you own the business I don't see this helping. If you were need someone to organize your office make sure you let your employer know you will be doing this on the exact day and time so they aren't surprised. I think if I was the boss and letting you do this you would be on your time and coming out of your own pocket. Many employer may not want to this even then because if anything negative happens like an injury they would have to pay ; and they many times do not want to do this. I would look through the yellow pages and look under coaches, also your psychiatrist or psychologist may know where to begin. Good Luck

ADD Coaches

Hi there:

Hiring an ADD coach is a great idea for anyone who needs a little extra motivation, explanation, or support in setting up an organizational system that works. Though your coach may not accompany you to work, they often assist you in organizing your home office or desk - and the same principles applied there often transfer to your office. Additionally, you can describe additional challenges at work and get the coach's input...

I would suggest reading a few of ADDitude's essential articles about hiring an ADD coach (below) and then consult either CHADD or the ADDitude Directory of ADHD Professionals to find a coach in your area.

A COACH IS A GREAT INVESTMENT

I interviewed several coaches (4) before I settled on Vicky. She is my cheerleader and in my first conversation (free consult) she gave me more tools to determine if something was right for me than any of the books or even my therapist have. You probably won't need a coach forever. I will meet with Vicky once a week to start and then wil probably cut back to once every two weeks. I am finding my strengths and learning to believe in me again and clearing away a lot of misconceptions about myself. I honestly don't think I could do this on my own. A coach won't and probably shouldn't go to work with you. (I told my boss about my add and he thought it meant my IQ was suddenly 10). You can tell a coach where you are struggling and where others see you struggling and they can give you tools to make those items easier to accomplish and/or help you decided if you are in the right place or if can become the right place. Find all the tools available to you. Call your insurance ask them where they can help - you might be surprised and they are not allowed to tell your work. I am going through Cognitive training - actually i start next week - it is through my therapist so your insurance may cover this. Best of Luck I know how hard it can be to adjust to a work environment.
