Anyone Tried Metadate CD?

My 7yr old son had been switched from Adderall RX due to irritability and mood swings at school. He had been on the Adderall RX a year and last year seemed to be successful. This school year everything seem to have changed. He gets anxious with new work material he does not know and the medication seemed to keep him anxious and then the would quickly become irritable and over reactive in class. The principle believes he is a troubled potentially aggressive child his Dr. said it could be classic side effect of his medication. The principle wants him to visit a psychiatrist his Dr. wants to find the right medication for his ADHD impulse control. At home his a wonderful caring funny child who wants very hard to please but very focused in his own world and has very sensitive feelings. He also has a GIFTED IQ which I think does not help him conform to his peer group and classroom experience. His Dr. suggested trying Metadate CD. Has anyone else tried this medication and what side effects did they see?

Metadate CD - works great

This response is a bit late, but I just found this magazine/website! My 12-1/2 year old son has been on Metadate CD for about 3 years. He was first diagnosed w/ADHD at age 6, in first grade. We went through multiple meds, visits to a neurologist and psychiatrist, and many pediatrician visits, before we finally ended up on Metadate CD (60 mg currently). He is also diagnosed with depression and is on fluoxetine 20 mg currently. He sounds a lot like your son. He is in gifted classes and is very kind and caring, but oh so easily frustrated. Many of the other meds gave him tics, some severe. Not on Metadate CD. He has no problems sleeping at night, and is well-controlled throughout the day. He still has his frustrations, but I have been very happy with the Metadate CD. I might add that the fluoxetine was added a year or so after the Metadate CD. He has no side effects at all on his meds. We also just added a short-acting Metadate in the evenings, which has also worked well. He was having behavioral issues in the evening, after the CD wore off, but these are now controlled. Hope this helps, even if it is late!

Metadate CD

Yes my son had tried Metadate CD and he still had all the usual stimulant side effects. (Irritability, trouble falling asleep, not eating) But every child is different and some may have less side effects. In my son's case the benefits did not outway the side effects. We are about to try him on adderral xr. Hopefully it goes better.

Tried Metadate and had anger issues

My son has been on every ADHD medicine there is. We tried Metadate CD last year because other meds had been giving him problems with sleeping and eating. The Metadate made him very angry. He was always angry, so we switched after only about 3 weeks. He has been on Concerta for quite a while and it has done wonders for his focus in school and no anger.

Metadate update . not a good fit.

Well it only took our sons teacher four hours to call and say something was wrong she said "that it seemed like he felt he was crawling out of his own skin! ". She also said that it seemed to have the opposite effect you would want to help him with his ADHD. When he got of the bus I could see right away he was not in control of himself. I felt so sorry for him unable to settle. He was able too get a good nights sleep however and did not seem unhappy to be speeding along in overdrive.

Our pediatrician is now going to refer us to a specialist who maybe more familiar with the side effects .. meanwhile we are going back to the Adderall RX tomorrow.
