Private School Accomodation

My fifth grade son, who has ADHD, attends a parochial school. He receives speech therapy from the Special Education Department of our local public school system. Is he entitled to any assistance for his ADHD from the public school system? Is the private school required to provide accommodations or an IEP?

Private School Accommodations

Hi, My son is also in Grade 5 at a parochial school. His school accesses public funding to put an EA in the classroom. It's still unclear to me, though, what the school's responsibility is once the funding has been received. I understand the procedure in the public system; it's all very operationalized. Our parochial (i.e. catholic) school is already dealing with severely stretched resources. They're certainly supportive in principle, but, in practice, it's very difficult to get everyone organized. I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks. Hang in there Kristin.

Private School Accomodation

Hello, My son is in 1st grade at a catholic school, they too are very limited on resources. However, they do have Therapist (or therapist in training rather) come on campus once a week to work with children referred by thier teachers. The therapist are completing internships or just beginning thier careers. They do review cases with seasoned professionals for further insight. My husband and I have an appointment with the therapist to review my sons past (this is our first year at this school) I will keep you posted on how it goes.

Relationship between public and private schools.

The first question you need to know, "Is the private school receiving any public money?"

As an over-generalization, if they don't receive public money, they can do whatever the hell they want.

If they receive $$, then they need to follow 504, but not IEPs.

The local district is required to have a "Seek and Find" process with the private schools. (Ours: if the school thinks a kid may have a problem, their counselor gets a release and calls our psychologist. Simple, but usually works without a problem.)

Many privates may offer an accommodation plan, but usually it is the district on the hook.

Sometimes, we can offer services that allow the student to remain in the current placement. I once had a private school students walk the block from their school to attend one of my lunch and/or after-school groups.

Otherwise, the public district makes their offer of services. Then the parent has a choice, accept the public option or waive the public district's offer to keep with whatever the private school is doing.
