Is It ADHD or Just Bad Behavior Choices?

My son was tested by the public school system 2 years ago and ranked very high on the ADHD chart. Now in 3rd grade we are continuing to battle his poor behavior choices, all of which seem to manifest in social situations, school, church, etc. At home, one on one, he is attentive and although he wants to be in everyone's business, is rather typical of an 8-year old boy. At school/church, he wants to be in control, disregards rules, focuses more on everyone else's business than his own work and has very little impulse control. Our son was adopted at 17 months and was exposed in-utero to drugs and alcohol. We're quickly running out of ideas about how to change his behavioral patterns. Is this really ADHD, or something else? We are not anxious to look into drugs for him and would very much like some advice on how we can help him.

Have him tested

I would have him tested by a doctor yourself -- the schools are not medical experts. I know you do not want him on drugs, but if he really does have ADHD, they will make a world of difference -- things get worse, not better, if not treated properly. If he does not need meds, great! When a child has ADHD -- they make MANY bad behavior choices -- that's part of the disability. My 16-yo son has made thousands of bad choices -- but we have been there with him throughout it all and it does get better. Yes, he has been on meds since he was 7 (and still is) -- but he is very smart (extremely high IQ), gets fair grades (not organized at all), very artistic (singing, visual art, drama, etc.), and everyone loves him (except the teachers he doesn't get along with). Sounds like he was just like your son is now -- to see him now, you wouldn't believe all that he has been through. No, he's not your perfect student -- but with everyone's help and keeping him involved with things he enjoy -- he's doing welll. It will get better ... also, after you have him tested, look into getting him an IEP with the school (this will be a necessity -- especially as he gets older and into middle/high school). Good Luck!
