I HAVE to find a work at home job!

I've been going through jobs like a bag of chips. At one time I had an at home job for 12 years and loved it - home day care, but I can't do that right now. I live in a rented room, I have broadband access and tons of computer equipment/software, and a liberal arts B.A. I can't figure out how to make money at home, in spite of the gazillion books I've read on it. When I look online I just keep ending up on sites I think are scans. I'm willing to work 14-15 hours a day, 6 days a week. Anybody have any ideas for me? Jan

Working at home

Hello Janna,

I'm working at home myself, and even though I can't give you a job, I can give you some pointers as to working at home. First of all, try wahm.com, they have a nice forum with a lot of information about working at home.

Working at home is great! Picking your own hours, etc you've heard it all probably. However, that freedom will most likely be your biggest downfall. It takes a whole of a lot discipline to start your work, search for clients, when you actually have a client and a project, then make sure you plan to make the deadline, so that you won't result in having to pull all-nighters just so you can finish your project in time! Believe me, I personally still have problems with that and as a result many pulled many all-nighters even though I've been working from home for 3 years now! Also, you mention that you are willing to work 15-16 hours a day, 6 days a week! What are you looking for? A burnout? Seriously, a big part of working from home is also knowing when to stop. Make sure you work 5 days a week, 8 (or 10 if you like) hours a day, but then close the door, walk away and do something nice for the evening, go to bed at time and have a good sleep. It is all too easy to think; Oh I'll just finish this thing, and then you look up and you see it's 10PM and you were due to walk the dogs an hour ago!

It all does sound a bit negative, it's not meant that way. I just want you to know that it's not all freedom when you work from home. I love this job, but I still have problems with certain things, mostly planning, that are already happening in a 'normal' job, but will become tenfold that problem when you have to look after yourself workwise.

If you still decide to get on your quest of working at home, I wish you all the best.

Maybe I can help

Hi Janna, I have worked from home for the past 30 years. First at selling real estate. Although I did have to go and show homes and list them outside of my home, most of what I did was done at home. Calls, setting appointments, ect. We have a cleaning business that I run from home to help my husband. I have tried others businesses that are run from the home and finally found one that I am consistently getting a check which isn't a whole lot yet but is growing each month. If you're interested please visit my website at: www.lifeforce.net/20527351

You will need to register under my number if you want to surf the site. THIS IS IMPORTANT. You do need to buy the product for consumption to be able to get bonuses, etc. BUT there is no sign up fee, no inventory, no shipping, no deliveries, no collecting money, no shipping back and more. Since you are knowledgeable in computers this might be for you. If not that's ok too. If you want me to call you please email your number and I will. Thanks and good luck.

Build your own online business

Do you have a special interest or expert knowledge? Are you a really great writer? If so, think about starting a blog or website where you can add Goodle AdSense or attract advertisers for income. You could also start an online store selling things you make or reselling. I hope this helps!

have you tried the ebay thing?

I'm sooo in the same boat. I had real day jobs that didn't last b/c I have problems multi tasking and learning things in under 5 minutes along with my poor memory. Try selling on ebay! Thats what I just started doing. There's books at the library that give you the "hows". Self employment is good for me, now that I'm on meds... it's in the pm when the vyvanse wears off that I end my work for the day. Good luck to you.

Currently working from home..

I'm working from home now, too and it's great. I did a few years ago as well when I ran a design business. However, it was too hard to stay afloat financially and there were just too many hats to wear. I had a hard time doing the work AND trying to get new business in..

A word of caution however - while everyone's experience is different, be aware that you will have significant challenges to working from home. Consider everything that might arise - from bigger long distance bills (I've had a some international clients and sometimes emails just didn't cut it) or unexpected distractions like power outages (once I had a Friday deadline and had a blackout at about 3:30 that day! I was gutted...)

You might also miss the social interaction. And since some of us already have some issues with communication, you might find a lot of time is be spent checking and rechecking what was said between you and your clients or employers.

Personally I find I'm way more productive and happy working at home since I have more time to take care of personal and household needs. But it might not last.. I guess it comes down to the work you do and how satisfying you find it - and whether or not you feel that could be affected by changing your work environment.
