Starting My Own Business?

I have had several careers in the last 15 years or so. Software testing, financial analyst, data analyst, programmer, and now I'm trying to study accounting (as in this is my 3rd quarter and I'm getting less and less motivated..). So clearly we can see that AD/HD has been around for quite awhile!

i woke up this morning and my head was doing the "energizer bunny" thing, you know, when it keeps going and going and going... So somewhere in the chain of thoughts, I realized that I missed working with databases, but hated that everywhere I had worked with them, the databases were messed up. Usually they were trying to intergrate their system into someone elses due to a takeover, etc., and the data was never "clean". Not to mention all the office politics and trying to work with managers that were technical people, but not good at relating with employees.

Then an idea sparked that I haven't let go of since. What if I started my own company? I've never ever thought that I would be remotely interested in the responsibility of my own business, but I can't let this idea go. Of course being ADD, my "company" went from being an idea to having offices all over the world since 8:00am this morning! :)

Does anyone have any input on starting a company when you have AD/HD? Several times today I've gone from super gung-ho about it to "what if it doesn't work", "what if there are no clients", "what if i lose interest in this too"? I don't even want to bring it up to my husband until I've given it more thought, but I will probably say something when I pick him up from the airport tonight. Fortunately, we are fine financially (I don't work, just go to school full time) and the concept I have in mind doesn't require a lot of capital.

I have a lot of questions, like if you do have your own company how do you keep yourself on a schedule? How do you avoid missing deadlines? One thing I have noticed about myself is if someone is expecting something from me, I will get it done. If it's something that's self-imposed, it's likely to sit on the back burner, especially if it's the kind of project that doesn't have to be done by a certain time. Is there anyone I should talk to about my fears and questions?

Thanks all

ADHD Entrepreneur

Hello whatzthat:

The ADHD mind is a beautiful thing: always probing, imagining, creating something! The trick is, of course, turning those dreams into reality - a process that takes much patience, coordination, organization, and planning. (Not always the strongest attributes of people with ADHD.)

ADDitude has a few good articles about ADHD entrepreneurs that you should read:

ADHD Career Advice from Top Executives with Attention Deficit

Finally, It Dawned on Me

Also, I would highly recommend researching and writing a full business plan before you move forward with any idea. If you have the stamina and drive to finish the business plan (which can get tedious), then you are far more likely to stick with the business launch. If you can't even get yourself to sit down and research competitors, costs, and marketing strategies, then you need to reassess your entrepreneurial intentions...

I hope this helps!

a work in progress

i am self employed as a remodeler, handyman, general contractor. starting your own business is tough for anyone, in this economy of uncertainity, tougher, and for those of us with ADD, a bigger challenge still.

a business plan is a great idea. I did not write one for me, but should If i want to better manage my growth.

Undiagnosed, I would bid a project with a lump sum, based on on hourly rate. 4 trips to the hardware store and 3 hours later, I would find that i would have left a small but essential hand tool home, go get one, come back, and find it in my toolbox. buy the wrong parts, not buy all the parts, etc. I have 8 saws to cut drywall with, 6 coping saws, about 10 caulk guns, and the list goes on.

I once took these, i thought, little corner guards off a shower door that i thought i completely installed. once that glass hit the tub and cracked, well, I now own a $1000 cracked shower door. Understand that we can visualize, conceptualize, turn it around spatially in our heads so we can see all the angles to it, but if we do not follow the basic rules governing what we do, and how we do it, we will always end up owning our mistakes.

it is cruicially important when the creativity is flowing to immediately take a voice recorder and talk it out, before that train leaves the station. you do not want to get distracted, and lose that key componet that allows you to build your unique and better mousetrap.

that is our gift and our curse.

If you know what you are good at, you can get / hire help for the rest.. I am a very knowledgeable and profecient builder, and I am great at sales, I sell my skill set and that of my carpenters daily, but i rely on the skill sets of my guys to turn a profit. I run like a butterfly appointment to appointment and let the worker bees stay put and complete the tasks that I struggle with.

Good luck.and much success in your endeavors.
