Sometimes kids grow out of their ADD/ADHD or learn enough coping mechanisms that they dont need as much or any meds. On the other hand sometimes they don't and medication use may be necessary into adulthood. Hence the term Adult ADD. My husband and three of my six kids are on medication and we are always adjusting dosages with someone. My oldest is almost 16 and I dont see her getting off meds anytime soon. If your son is only 12, I wouldnt be worried about decreasing yet. He is going thru major physical changes and growth spurts. Plus lots of emotional ups and downs. I would keep things as stable as possible. Good luck, I truly know what you are going through.

Each child is different and some may need increases and others might be able to decrease the dose. My son was on Concerta for four years and he had two increases during that time. About a year ago the Concerta didn't seem to be working as well and the doctor switched him to Vyvanse. He told us that many times teenagers and adults do better on Adderall and Vyvanse than on the Concerta even though the Concerta worked well for them when they were younger. The brains of adults, teenagers and children are all different.

My son just turned 17 and he is doing fine on the Vyvanse. I take Vyvanse as well and my husband takes Adderall. My 26 yr. old daughter was taking Vyvanse, but switched to Adderall because of her insurance costs since it was cheaper.
