Help with Focalin xr

My 7 year old son has adhd and was prescribed 10 mg.Focalin XR. All was well for the first couple of weeks, now he is very emotional at night( when the drug wears off) and yawns excessively. Has anyone else had a similiar situation? We also tried to lower his dose and that did not work - he could not focus in class. Does the yawning stop? What about the emotional meltdown?

Please - any and all input would be appreciated.

Thanks, Paul

Response to focalin xr

My six year old experienced getting very tired and sleepy during school. He also was chewing on pencils and would cry over anything. I would give him the medicine at home and send him to school so I didn't really see all the symptoms. Luckily his teacher did notice that something was not right. After he would be at school for a couple of hours she noticed that he would want to sleep a lot and he chewed pencils like he stayed nervous and pulled at his hair when he would get frustrated. She also started noticing that he was turning a light shade of blue around the lips. She decided to take him to the school nurse. The nurse found that his blood pressure had bottomed out and she could not even get his oxygen level to register. If it hadn't been for the teacher recognizes these symptoms and realizing that something was wrong I would have never known because I didn't give him the medicine on the weekends. He was having somewhat of an allergic reaction to the medicine. I'm not saying that this is what is happening to your child but my advice would be to watch him closely and monitor his vital signs after the medicine has been in his system for a little while. They may be able to just change his medicine.
