Is this More Than ADHD????

My son is 9 and is reading on a 1st grade level and should be in 4th grade. The school has put him on a 504 plan and is now looking into special education. I don't know what is wrong w/him though. He was diagnosed w/ADHD and I feel he has ADHD, can't focus, impulsive, can't follow 2 step directions, etc. but the meds we have tried don't help, he only becomes more angry and irritated. We were told 2 years ago he is dyslexic however the special classes he has been in have not helped and we were told if he was truly dyslexic then he would show some signs of improvement from being in the program for so long. He also can not retain information....I am wondering if this is more then ADHD and if so what?

More than ADHD?

I would get another opinion, from a psychiatrist if possible. He could just need a different type of medicine or he could have something else in addition to ADHD. Depression and bipolar disorder are two conditions that may become worse if someone is given ADHD medication without treating the depression or bipolar disorder. In children, ADHD medication unmasks the depression and can make the child more hostile.

It may be as simple as changing the ADHD medication he is on. A knowledgeable doctor is very important. Most pediatricians can handle simple ADHD but if your situation is more complex, you need to find a doctor who is more aware of the other possiblities. Unfortunately, it sometimes takes several doctors before finding all the answers. Keep trying!

More than ADHD

If your son was diagnosed with Dyslexia he still has it. There is no cure for dyslexia. But they can learn to learn, usally not thru the traditional methods. The fact that he has not progress with what has been presented to him does not mean he does not have it, it means the methods they are using are not working. My daughter is severely Dyslexic and the school system told me for 6 years that they would help her, they tried but none of their methods worked, so by the time she was in 5th grade her reading level was at Kindergarten. She is now a 7th grader at a school for Dyslexia and making progress, we have a long road ahead of us but at least she is with teachers who care and are willing to try different methods until they find the one that works. The best thing to do is stay positive , make sure he always has something going on in his life that he can be successful at and keep on advocating for him until he gets what he needs.

Mood changes in my child on adhd meds to!

My 8 year old was diagnosed with adhd 9 months ago. We put her on ritalin, then vyvanse, then focalin, then back to vyvance. her mood was bad when we put her on the ritalin and got bad as time passed. When we put her on the vyvnase she started to get angry and verbally aggressive. We took her off the meds and took her to a psyciatrist that told us the meds brought out a mood disorder. She was susceptible to it because I have a family history of mood disorders, she should have been tested first to see if the meds could bring it out, as a result of the family history. The psychiatrist put her on a antipsych med and hopes that will control the chemicals in her brain that are cousing the mood swings then we will reintroduce the meds to treat the adhd. If there's a history of a mood disorder you should have the child tested. I would go for another opinion weather there is or isn't. Go with your instinct. We switched doctors when the first one would not listen about the mood swings, and now we are getting the help she needs. I hope that helped Good luck.
