A Perfect Mess

I too am always looking for ways to do things and be more organized and one day I was at the library and looking in the section of personal productivity. I came across a book called A Perfect Mess (http://www.aperfectmess.com/ ) and thought it sounded interesting. I read the book and what an amazing book if you want a paradigm shift. The book does not say being disorganized is a good thing but points out that people don't really consider the cost/benefit of organizing and to get too organized may cause stress that it is suppose to relieved by the organizing. I won't go into too much detail unless others are interested but as an adult with ADD I feel a lot of pressure to keep things organized and look for new ways but I found this book shocking in the sense that it never occurred to me there was another side to the nature of the organizing business and being organized in general. Has anyone else read this book and what are your thoughts?

Organized chaos

Too bad not everyone can read the book. I came into a new office 2 years ago and noticed I was viewed by my office organization everyday. To the point if a paper clip is not in it's tray it is noticed. The amount of time it takes to move or take items, papers, etc with me so I don't get judged is time consuming and in a way a hostile work environment. Meanwhile someone unproductive, but "organized" is doing a great job. Reality is they are hiding or shoveling into unseen piles only to erupt like a volcano later.

Never read the book, but I already agree with the concept.

Yikes!

impoderable, your office sounds like a killer. That ranks up there with the place I was just working at. They would rather you be sitting at your desk than working from home. I don't think they cared if you were playing Solitare all day at your desk vs. getting loads of work done at home. As long as you were physically there in the building, they were happy.

Disorder and Organized

At coffee-break the group agreed that I was very organized.

I laughed and asked did they ever really look at my working area. At the beginning and ending of any day, and at anytime, it was the messiest work station in the whole office.

These dear people replied: "That is not what we are talking about. What we mean is: You are very organized in the method that you get your work done."

Dear Photoboy:

Thank you for your book suggestion. I wish to share that at my office (which is VERY small) my workstation is always by far the most cluttered. But also, it is where all documents end. I work in a government agency where all papers have to be stamped, signed, photocopied, revised and stamped again. You know the bureaucratic deal. I am the key person to solve or look for solutions to many day to day problems and at the end of the day I never even get a " well done" or "good job" ...on the other hand, my messy desk always gets a comment. (sigh)
