Having Trouble Getting ADD Help from School

My son was just diagnosed with ADD. He is almost twelve and in the 5th grade. He is very immature and small for his age. In addition to him being mentally behind in maturity he is also behind in Math and Reading. His math is not even 3rd grade level. His reading is barely at 4th grade. His overall grades in all subjects is d's and c's. I have requested the school evaluate him. The first thing they did was look at his grades and speak to his teacher. They determined that there was no significant problem. They refused to evaluate him. I was FURIOUS!!! Now they have agreed to put him in remedial math and English and look at his test scores after Christmas. I just feel like that do no see my son as having a disability and that he does not need the extra help. HELLO? Is there not a problem when a fifth grader is below 3rd grade in math and 4th in English?

I was hoping that I could get some opinions and thoughts from other people who have won an IEP under the IDEA act or 504

Thanks Lori

ADHD Accommodations

Hello:

I can understand your frustration and worry for your son's academic (and social) well-being. There's nothing worse than seeing your child struggle and feeling helpless.

In short, the school should be doing more. If your son has a formal ADHD diagnosis then he should be eligible for ADHD school accommodations under an IEP or 504 Plan.

Here are some of ADDitude's best articles about getting a formal ADHD evaluation, working with the school on accommodations, and checking up to make sure the IEP or 504 is working...
