The Foot in Mouth Syndrome

Hello All!! I am a recently diagnosed Adult with ADD after 32 years of thinking it and then finally being diagnosed. Sorry I am tired and I should get to the point. I am wondering if any one out their has ever had a "foot in mouth syndrome." It usually happens to me at the end of the day when I am tired and my thoughts are slowing down. Like today I have a drawer full of candy and my HR manager came by and saw it. She said ohh that looks good. Well before you know it I stated rather loudly "you know you want it"..... Well sure enough the office got quite and then laughed at me silly boy. It was embarrassing and now I have this complex of wondering what she thought. This is a new job and they currently don't know that I have ADD but now I am stuck because I didn't mean to say what I did I was tired and the words came out before i could stop them. Well I will stop venting now and go to sleep I just hope that I still have a job tomorrow..... I want to be taken seriously and advance but I say things like this and I shake my head. Again thank you for listening and you all have a good night.

Adult ADHD Social Skills

Hi Scott:

I'm sure the office candy scenario is not nearly as horrible as you're imagining or remembering - even coworkers without ADHD may blurt out off-kilter comments at the end of a long day. That being said, ADHD is notorious for causing spontaneous, unfiltered speech that sometime result in social akwardness.

ADDitude has a great article about this called Open Mouth, Insert Foot

You may also want to check out our other articles about adult ADHD social skills, including some good workplace pointers like How to Get Along with the Group at Work and 5 Ways to Listen Effectively.

I hope this helps!

I often have to hop around on one foot . . .

Scott, don't feel badly! I've had to hop around on one foot, because the other one was in my mouth, and yes it's embarrassing at times. That said, I've also apologized to people for stupid things I've said, and also talked with my closes friends about ADD.

Here's something positive for you - I've learned to see bad behaviors coming and been able to stop myself. Once I learn about them, I've been able to control them a little better. There are times when I'm just DYING to blurt out something and have had to stop myself.

I know for me sometimes I get so frustrated by this nonsense, but by working on these new skills and doing some research, it's undoubtedly possible to overcome problems.

Good luck! H. B. New York City, NY
