Why is it So Difficult for Me to Get the Medication I Need?

I was diagnosed with ADHD in college. My then-doctor told me I would benefit from taking Adderall and to take my test results to the health center on campus and get a prescription and that's what I did. No big deal.

Well I had to leave college for a variety of reasons that I'd prefer not to get into and because I'm poor and lack health insurance and the doc who diagnosed me I saw thru Voc Rehab who've since dumped me so I went to a local clinic and asked for an Adderall prescription. The doctor refused wouldn't even look at my test results and more or less accused me of being a drug addict which I am not.

The Adderall helped me so much and the generic version is pretty cheap even out-of-pocket. I'm so frustrated!

ADHD Medications

Hi Anya:

I'm so sorry to hear that you've had such trouble getting the ADHD medication that you need. I find it shocking that the local clinic doctor would not even review your ADHD test results. My best suggestion would be to visit another clinic or try another physician at that clinic - ideally someone who has some experience with ADHD. If you can explain your symptoms and the specific areas that improved with medication, the doctor will be more likely to agree to medical treatment.

In the meantime, you may want to read ADDitude special report on Alternative ADHD Treatments, which includes information about how omega-3 fatty acids, diet, exercise, and other non-medical remedies can also alleviate some ADHD symptoms.

I hope this helps!
