Am I Going Crazy? What Gives?

I can't focus... obviously. I do quite a bit to attempt to keep myself busy, but when the weekends hit... bad news. I go out with friends until early morning hours and feel like crap the next day. I always like doing something, and I feel like my weekends have been always geared toward going out and being social in a bar. I know I want to change this behavior, but it's habit... it's what I know. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to break this habit?

I'd also like to take a class, but my motivation is well... lacking. I know I need to, but it's just not fun, you know? I'm all about being social and hanging out with my friends, but in looking at the bigger picture, I need to do more for myself. I want to try to incorporate regular working out into my schedule, and I feel like I just don't have the time (lame excuse).

Can someone please help?

Motivation

Hi there:

Welcome to the ADDitude forums! Spending your weekends socializing with friends is not necessarily a bad thing, but if it means you're not sleeping enough, drinking too much, or sacrificing other important aspects of your life (exercise), then a little moderation may be in order...

First, have you been diagnosed with ADHD and are you taking medication to treat it? If not, ADHD medication may be an obvious place to start - it can help improve focus, motivation, and organization skills.

If you're already treating your ADHD, then it may be a simple matter of trying some procrastination busters.

Also, peer pressure is a great motivator, I find. Can you find a (non-ADD) friend for a regular date at the gym or a running partner? Or someone to sign up for a class with you? Knowing that someone is waiting for and counting on you sometimes is enough motivation to get out the door even when you'd rather not...

Hope this helps!

re: Motivation

Hello!

Yes, I am currently taking Focalin-XR. I was diagnosed a year or two ago, and I figured I had been crazy all these years. All of your ideas sound great... it's just a matter of implementing them into my life. I will take a look at the links you have suggested.

Thanks for your response!

I find the people waiting on me a great motivation skill. The elderly I work with appreciate me coming and I enjoy being welcome into their homes.. Many are slow, so things are never really carried out faster than we both can cope with.. A smile and a hug can keep me motivated to turning up on time to work.. Old people whom are isolated in a prison like home sometimes because of their own beliefs can and will give alot of space for my chatter and we can get alot of ground covered if they feel good in company... They have rituals and it is no problem if they ask me for a helping hand to do something extra,.. Making people smile and feel they get the help they actual need is a "yes" ending to a work day..
