Personal Experience w/ Son with Different Medications

Hi! I am new to the forum. My 9 year old son has struggled with school since kindergarten. For the first couple of years we just thought he was immature for his age, but as time went on we knew this was not all. My son's pediatrician put him on an ADD med called metidate cr - caused my son to go into a state of depression. He was also on concerta and focalin xr-these made him really aggressive. We have also tried strattera and had no luck. I finally took him to a psychologist to have him tested by a professional and it was confirmed that he does have the ADD without hyperactivity. I proceeded to take him to a psychiatrist instead of his pediatrician, he let me know that all of these drugs mentioned above with the exception of strattera are in the same drug class. Meaning that they all have the same base ingredient, this is why my son was having the same reactions. His psychiatrist put him on a new med known as Vyvanse (same class as Adderall), within two days of meds I received a phone call from his teacher that Kyle was like a totally different student. He was very happy and able to stay on task and focus. My son has an IEP in school where he goes to the "special services resource room 600 minutes a week (2 hrs a day). Since being placed on Vyvanse we have updated his IEP and he only goes for 300 minutes a week (1 Hr a day) > I have had nothing but good reports from his teachers. I am also seeing a quite a bit of change at home with his homework and concentration. Tjones

Personal Experience

I have 2 kids, one with ADD and one with ADHD. Both are on meds. I am glad that you found one that works. Now that it is working, try doing some other stuff to try and get him off the meds. Remove all toxic cleaners, scented candles, laundry soap and go "green" from your home. These kids react to everything. Do you have trouble with him not wanting to eat? That is one of the side effects of some of the meds. My son has this problem with the Focalin. Give him a good multi vitamin, and omega 3's these will help too.

dosage?

Glad that your son had success with Vyvanse. Can I ask what his weight and dosage was? My son is almost 10, weighs 110, and is on 30 mg....not quite there yet, but maybe the dose is too low. Thanks
