Re-evaluation Trouble

Originally my son in pre-school had an IEP for speech & language delay. His delay is fine so we've moved from an IEP for speech & language to a 504 for his ADHD. He's now 12 and has not had a MFE (multi factored evaluation) re-evaluation in 4 years. I've asked (in writing) and been denied for 3 years now. He has accommodations but continues to struggle to remember to even bring a pencil to class. We burn through about 5/wk. His grades are C's and D's and his State achievement scores are just below state levels. I want him tested as I suspect some LD issues as I believe it's very common to have ADHD and LD, no? My view is how can we "treat" the problem of ADHD and possible LD if we haven't made an evaluation???? I know these evaluations in Ohio should be repeated every 3 years OR if a parent requests. I am continually denied in writing saying he has a lack of drive and motivation. (He also has depression) Any suggestions?

ADHD Diagnosis

Hi Traci:

How frustrating! First, has your son been diagnosed with ADHD by a doctor? Is he taking any ADHD medication or alternative treatments? If you haven't done so already, I would first seek a formal diagnosis from a doctor experienced in ADHD who can consult with you on treatment options. You may find that his school performance improves a little just with that.

Then I would recommend following this sample letter for requesting accommodations - send copies to your son's school administrators and teachers as well as the appropriate contacts at the school district level if you feel the school will continue to ignore you.

ADDitude has a great ADHD at School eBook that is packed full of information about classroom accommodations and working with teachers and common learning disabilities - all great information to have going into a meeting with your son's school so that you know exactly what to ask for in an IEP or new 504.

I hope this all helps. Best of luck!
