Neurological Testing at 5?

We just got back from our family psychologist, she suggested to that we take our 5 year old son to a neurologist. My husband has ADHD and 99.9% sure my son does as well. He's having a really hard time in kindergarten, we are getting phone calls daily about his acting out and agression. We went to the psychologist to help us get some perspective on this touchy situation, but I'm not sure what they can tell us. He's only 5, his brain hasn't completely developed yet. Am I working from misinformation? I'm wondering if it makes sense to get this done or whether we are spinning our wheels and should just address the problems that he's currently facing until he's a bit older. Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks! designmom

NEUROLOGICAL TESTING AT 5?

HI, I'M NOT A DOCTOR OR ANYTHING, I'M AN ADULT WITH ASPERGERS, ADHD & OTHER DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES. MY ADVICE WOULD BE TO GET YOUR SON TESTED, BECAUSE THERE COULD BE OTHER HIDDEN SPECIAL NEED'S, & THAT'S WHY HE COULD BE HAVING DIFFICULTY, BECAUSE MAYBE HE'S NOT UNDERSTANDING THINGS, & DOSEN'T KNOW THE RIGHT WAY ON HOW TO EXPRESS HIMSELF & ASK FOR HELP. I KNOW THAT'S WHAT HAPPEND WITH ME, IS THAT I WAS ACTING OUT BECAUSE I WAS FUSTERATED & DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THINGS, & I GOT TESTED AROUND THE AGE OF 5, & THAT'S HOW THEY FOUND OUT THAT I HAVE OTHER SPECIAL NEED'S, ALONG WITH ADHD. I HOPE THIS HELPS. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, YOU CAN FEEL FREE TO CALL ME, AT 952-212-8670.

Yes!

Given the family history of ADHD, and your son's current behavioral issues at school, why wouldn't you at least have him tested? If he was having problems with his vision, you'd have his eyes tested, and if they prescribed glasses you'd get him a pair, right? Try not to fall into the trap of thinking that ADHD is just "a behavioral issue". it is so much more complex and is rooted in the brain's chemical balance and make up. Maybe he will need medication to help him control his impulsive behaviors and maybe not... but don't let that prevent you from understanding all that you can about what he needs. My son was diagnosed at 4 and is now in kindergarten and thriving! Good luck

thanks!

We are going to have him tested. I think the idea that something neurological could "be wrong" with my baby was the issue I had to overcome. When it moves from quirky behavior to a more dynamic behavioral and social situation, I had to really take a close look at everything that we are doing and how we are doing it. Thanks for the great advice!
