Medicated For Years, Seeing Psychiatrist This Week...

I'm 22, and have been medicated (most of the time) since I was around 5 or 6. Just ritalin for many years, and then sometime in high school, switched to concerta. Must note, I always had the appetite suppressant thingy goin on, didn't last for more than a couple hours with the ritalin though. With concerta, it would commonly last for around 12 hours. (It never faded after a few weeks, like so many descriptions say they should.) And I can force myself to eat, but it almost hurts. In my head, I just don't need food.

For the last couple years, I haven't been taking anything. Before I stopped,I was up to 54mg of concerta every morning (when I remember to take it, of course.) I still had my old pills lying around and recently tried taking them for a few days. Barely ate, dropped a few pounds, while even though I'm trying to lose weight, thats not the right way to go about it :3. Other than the appetite loss, I LOVE how much better I feel on it, although I would think I should be on a lower dose if I stick with concerta.

Must also note I am depressive, gonna be reevaluated for such things when I see the psych. Had been on zoloft since around 15 or 16 when I took accutane for cystic acne. 100mg for most of that time. Also hadn't been taking for close to 2 years. Recently, my regular doctor just kinda tossed 50mg zoloft at me and basically ignored anything I said about adhd. (Hence seeing a psychiatrist.)

Sorry, I have a tendency to make long posts. But anyway, I really don't want the appetite suppressant side effect, because when trying to lose weight, it's actually bad to eat as little as I do when I take concerta. May lose weight, but a lot of it will be muscle too :(. Is there ANY adhd meds that don't have that side effect that actually work? So I can bring them up with the doc.

Side Effects

Hi Adsartha:

Thanks for your post. It's tough to recommend a specific medication since every drug impacts different people in different ways. But I can recommend a few ADDitude articles that might help arm you with information for your upcoming appointments...

ADHD Medication: Say No to Side Effects

When ADHD Meds Suppress Appetite

Alternative ADHD Treatment: Can Diet Ease Attention Deficit Symptoms?

More on common side effects for ADHD medications.

Also, have you looked into alternative ADHD treatments like fish oil? You might want to check out our free booklet for some ideas, too...

I hope this helps!

Fish oil?

I'm not even too sure where I'd find fish oil, because I am also tryin to lose weight, and I heard those omega-3's are very good for that as well.

Where the heck could I find fish oil?

And I'm not into the idea of cutting things from my diet for ADHD, parents made me do it growing up, things like... only allowed to have sprite or 7-UP as far as soda went, no artificial colors or flavors, or preservatives, and no apples or oranges. (They were convinced oranges made me go into some sort of hyper-rage.) I loved fruit and was always rough for me on that part. :(

My son had the same appetite suppression with concerta, it never went away, he went from 56 pounds at age nine to 52 pounds in 9 months on concerta...which incidentally is ritalin in a time release form, it sounded like you think it is different, not ritalin....anyhow, there is a medication to stimulate appetite that worked wonders for my son, it is an older antihistamine called periactin(generic cyproheptadine). He takes 2 mg in the morning, and two in the evening. It has no adverse side effects, it simply makes him have a normal appetite. If you research the med thoroughly, you will find out that it is given to anorexic and elderly patients to stimulate appetite.

Whoops

Sorry sweetie, I must've worded it weird. I do know concerta is time release ritalin, was just stating that it lasts way longer with the concerta than ritalin, for obvious reason. Sorry for making myself look silly :)

I will be goin to that psychiatrist here within a couple hoursm and I will ask him about that appetite med. Thanks :D /hug
