Can Focalin make you Hyper?

My 9 year old son has ADHD and is dyslexic. He has an extreamly hard time focusing at school and following directions at home. He started taking Focalin XR yesterday, 10mg in the morning and he seems more hyper to me then before. He talks 90mph and does not seem very calm at all. The teacher said he seemed "more in the moment" at school however was still implusive and blurting out answers. Anyone else seen this? Should I give it a few more days?

ADHD Medication

Hi there:

Generally speaking, you should give a new ADHD medication at least a few weeks to take full effect. One day is definitely not long enough to judge a med's effectiveness in controlling impulsivity, improving focus, etc. I would say: Try not to get discouraged, but give your son at least until the end of the month on his Focalin prescription before talking with your doctor about increasing his dosage or changing his medication.

Also, here is a great article about ADHD medication that might help:

Best of luck!
