First-Grader Needs ADHD Medication

I have an ADHD son who just started 1st grade. It is not working. He has always been a very lovable, happy kid, but very immature. He has always been behind his twin sister socially and academically. He is having outbursts in class, can't sit still, and is scaring the other kids by his behavior. He is sort of a class clown -- but very touchy to other kids.

I was called into the school yesterday and they told me what is going on. I was not surprised. I have been avoiding this conversation for years. I tried him on meds twice before but got scared. Last years meds did not work (ritalin).

I am very sad for him and what he must be going through. I am meeting with his doctor today. Any comments or help would be appreciated.

I feel your pain

My son was 6 when he started meds for ADHD. He was diagnosed with ADHD and then we did not put him on meds at first. It was such a hard hard choice. I thought "I can't believe that my 6 yr. old child needs to take a pill everyday just to get by". It hurt. I felt helpless as a mom...I would get really frustrated with him some days, and then on others my heart just broke knowing that he has so much trouble controlling himself. I thought about side effects of the pill, not just for now, but long term...I just kept thinking "what if there is something that happens to him as a result of taking these meds for years?" It was such a struggle. When it came down to it, and my pros and cons were weighed out, we decided to try medicine. I realized that with meds, things would be better all around...for him, me, the kids in class, the teacher...etc...and the less he got in trouble, the better his self esteem would be, plus the fact that he could focus his attention for longer periods made his grades go way up almost immediatley! It made SUCH a difference. It is still very hard every morning that I give him that pill (we choose to do it at home though you can have the nurse give it to him at school as well), but it is what works best for my child. Also, it took us several months to get a med that worked for him...first we tried the patch which did nothing for him...then adderall XR 10 mg which worked at first but then just stopped. What eventually worked for him was the Vyvanse 30mg...and I'm told that as they grow you have to change their meds sometimes...so we are just taking one day at a time and trying to make the most of it...I suggest the same for you. It is a hard choice, but you just have to decide what is best for your child...and the good thing is with the internet, you have TONS of info about all this at your fingertips...so search and read away, inform yourself and then do what you need to do. Very best wishes...God bless...

Help From An Expert Mom

You can read my story at http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/955233/conquering_adhd_setting_a_boy_free.html?cat=5 It may help you. Hold on to hope. You really can help your child. I have found a connection as have many others between nutrition and ADHD symptoms diminishing. I have noticed that even with meds some symptoms remain or even reappear. I tried the healthy avenue and have had much success. I have written other articles as well that may help you. Check out this site to try vitamens that help clarity and focus and the immune system help4adhd.tyh.us They are a blessing to my son and I take them as well. Blessings to you and your child. May his recovery be easy for both of you. LoraR

First Grader with ADHD

My son is taking the 30 mg. of vyvanse and it has done wonders for his impulse control and behavior in school. He was actually dismissed from a preschool when he was three. Talk about being sad for your child! I can totally relate on the struggle that you go through when considering meds. The biggest difference I saw was his ability to play, believe it or not. Before the medication, he was so easily frustrated and perfectionistic, he couldn't even play with simple blocks. I take one day at a time, but feel the medication was the best solution for now.
