I feel your pain
My son was 6 when he started meds for ADHD. He was diagnosed with ADHD and then we did not put him on meds at first. It was such a hard hard choice. I thought "I can't believe that my 6 yr. old child needs to take a pill everyday just to get by". It hurt. I felt helpless as a mom...I would get really frustrated with him some days, and then on others my heart just broke knowing that he has so much trouble controlling himself. I thought about side effects of the pill, not just for now, but long term...I just kept thinking "what if there is something that happens to him as a result of taking these meds for years?" It was such a struggle. When it came down to it, and my pros and cons were weighed out, we decided to try medicine. I realized that with meds, things would be better all around...for him, me, the kids in class, the teacher...etc...and the less he got in trouble, the better his self esteem would be, plus the fact that he could focus his attention for longer periods made his grades go way up almost immediatley! It made SUCH a difference. It is still very hard every morning that I give him that pill (we choose to do it at home though you can have the nurse give it to him at school as well), but it is what works best for my child. Also, it took us several months to get a med that worked for him...first we tried the patch which did nothing for him...then adderall XR 10 mg which worked at first but then just stopped. What eventually worked for him was the Vyvanse 30mg...and I'm told that as they grow you have to change their meds sometimes...so we are just taking one day at a time and trying to make the most of it...I suggest the same for you. It is a hard choice, but you just have to decide what is best for your child...and the good thing is with the internet, you have TONS of info about all this at your fingertips...so search and read away, inform yourself and then do what you need to do.
Very best wishes...God bless...
