Just Found Out I'm Pregnant...

I take dextroamphetamine for my ADD, and smoking has also been a "crutch" for me for quite a while. I recently found out that I'm pregnant. Due to fertility issues - it took me almost 2 years to get pregnant with my first child and I had not yet been diagnosed with ADD, so I was not on any meds. I had also quit smoking. I was extremely surprised to recently find out that I was pregnant again. The doctor that originally put me on the dextroamphetamine has since retired and my current doctor admits that he knows nothing about ADD nor the associated medications. I have an appointment with a specialist but not until almost half way through the pregnancy and I would like to know, as soon as possible, what dosage (if any) is safe to take while pregnant. I have cut my dosage in half, as well as cut down on smoking - but I am finding it extremely difficult to manage my toddler, business, marraige, and household. I can't imagine being able to entirely quit either, or both, the smoking or meds but I am also feeling so much guilt and concern for the unborn baby. What should I do! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ADHD Medications

Hi Jacobsen:

I know you won't want to hear this, but you've got to stop smoking. Continuing to smoke can pose serious health risks to your baby and his/her developing organs - it can also impact his sleep patterns and ability to nurse as an infant. The research on that topic is clear.

What's less clear is the impact of ADHD medication on a developing fetus. ADHD expert Larry Silver says...

"While there is no solid research that proves whether any of the ADHD medications, stimulants or antidepressants, have an impact on the fetus during pregnancy, the FDA and pharmaceutical manufacturers advise that you not take these medications during pregnancy or while trying for pregnancy. It is generally advised that you discontinue any inessential medication while you're pregnant or nursing, as they may show up in your milk."

Other experts agree that going off of ADHD medication while pregnant is the best-case scenario. But you shouldn't have to make that decision yourself - you need a new doctor who specializes in ADHD and can help you figure out the treatment plan that makes most sense for you.

A doctor who know about alternative ADHD treatments like fish oil, nutrition, exercise, etc. and who can assess the benefits and risks of medication for you.

ADDitude offers a directory of ADHD professionals that might help and so do organizations like CHADD

I hope this helps!
