Wife and I Have ADD

I'm new to this site, and I'm looking for input. Both my wife and I have ADD. I am holding a good job, my wife is a "stay at home" Mom as we have (5) kids ranging from 11 to 2 years old. The oldest has Autism.

To cut to the chase, we are both on Adderall for the last year and a half, but we have been married going on 15 years now and due to impulsivity and procrastination, our credit is ruined, we only have a savings account as our checking account was closed due to overdrafts. We tried to get help from Greenpath (credit counselor to help us manage our bills), but we cannot even pay them what they need as we cannot manage our money.

I am 40 years old and only have about $6,000 in a retirement account as I keep canceling my automatic deposit to my retirement account as we struggle feeding and housing 5 kids and keeping costs under control.

We rent as we don't have the credit to buy a house and this wears on me big time as I feel like a failure for not properly getting my life in order and am afraid of what the kids will think once they are old enough to know better.

Has anyone out there had similar issues, and if so, is there help?

Help Managing Money

Hello there:

Welcome to the ADDitude forums and thank you for sharing your story. Managing money is a major struggle for many ADD adults but of course you have the extra challenge of five kids and a spouse who struggles with the same thing. I've researched some articles that I think might help give you some ideas...

Married to ADHD: Relationship Advice for You and Your Attention Deficit Spouse

Manage Your Money with Adult ADD!

Budget Strategies for ADD Adults: 18 Ways to Save

No More Late Fees: Pay Your Bills on Time

You might also consider hiring an ADD coach who can help with organization and budgeting strategies in the long-term...

I hope this helps!
