ADHD is 100% Environmental???

I am a parent of a 14 girl who was diagnosed 6 years ago with ADHD. She has been on Concerta and has been extremely successful. During a recent conversation with a friend who works for our Headstart program, my friend conveyed to me that her experience has been that ADHD is 100% environmental; all nurture and NOT nature. I was blown away. We've struggled with solutions for 11 years and have been avid readers on the subject for 8 years and I've NEVER come across this conclusion. Is this a new theory emerging in the research? If not, how do I educate this woman who works in the system, aiding in the care, treatment and diagnosis of all kinds of mental health issues? HELP, because my biggest concern is that she is misinformed and kids are being mishandled.

ADHD Is a Medical Condition

Hello Parent 14:

To put it bluntly, your friend is wrong. ADHD is a biologically based medical condition that results from an imbalance of chemical messengers, or neurotransmitters, within the brain. It's hard to argue that diet, exercise, parenting, etc. don't impact a child's ADHD but these environmental factors are NOT the cause.

ADHD Environmental

If ADHD is environmental please have someone explain to me how or why only one out of my four children is ADHD? My third child, a boy, has always been different....very.active, impulsive, fearless, ect. My oldest may have ADHD but was never diagnosed....he seems to manage better. My kids are 22, boy; 18, girl; 17, ADHD boy; and 15 boy. They are all unique but the 17 year old has always been the one who stands out. deyette

I don't think so...

I agree, your friend is wrong. I have two older brothers and I am the only one who has ADD.

It is a little scary to think that she is the one dealing with these kids and she doesn't know that.

Educate Her

I would suggest to share some information with her. She is misinformed but I am sure she is willing for positive input in order to help her with her work. Environmental influences have an effect, but they are by no means the whole story.
