8-Year-Old ADHD/Aspergers

My son began with a developmental delay..sensory integration, lots of OT speech and a special pre-K schooling. He did better with the autism until 7 yrs. old everything feel apart. His impulse control was dangerous to him and everyone else. He's been hospitalized 3 times for observation and they finally just 8 wks. ago for the first time said, ADHD. Prior we'd had diagnosis of schizophrenia, autism, seizers disorders and no one agreed. Once he was on the vyvanse.....WOW is all we can say, it's like God handed our son back to us. The Drs. now are even qu. the aspergers and said lots of these kids have sensory integration as well. Today he had stiffening and painful muscles cramps in arms and legs followed by heavy shaking and head pains, this bums us and our therapist out a great deal, as to the reguard we do not want to change now that we've found success in this med. and dose. I don't know if he is suffering seizers, or if it's a side effect. I hope it was a fluke and he can still have the relief of this medication. He is having two sided conversations, looking for cause and effect for choices he makes and is much more predictable. I can not believe how far around the world of diagnosis we had to go to get to ADHD, but all I can say is we are sooo grateful it is the best diagnosis, (verses metabolic genetic problems etc. and everything we've feared) and it is treatable! He is a super kid really focused on fish and the environment and wants to be the next Steve Irwinn, I don't doubt it for a second. thanks for reading.

Diagnosis Runaround

Hi Moley:

Thanks so much for sharing your story. It's always disheartening to hear about a child who has to endure so much testing and misdiagnosis, but in this case I'm relieved to hear that the ADHD medication is making such a big difference.

Unfortunately, misdiagnosis for children is not uncommon. And since you're still working out the kinks with medication I thought you might find these articles helpful...

hang in there

My 15 year old dignose was a shock for me he has ADHD/Asperges and it has really affected his life in teenage years and where school really counts.. It was hard to diagnose my son and will be hard to help him in the future as he is a tough banana to get into at close range with. Being asked civil near going questions can give three reactions, F* off, bursting into tears or just leave me alone. But the head doctor at Risskov childrens and teenager mental hospital here in denmark, reached him and really opened my eyes for all the symptoms my son has for both ADHD and Asperges.. We have only know this several months so my head and heart are doing wheel spins.. It has been a hard mental trip for me as I have ADHD and my youngest sons form for ADD/Austim has left his big brother and I feeling like a peice of beef that has been banged 1000 times because of his past huge behaviour deficit problems.. The worst to cope with is little brother is not medication treatable and my quiet ADHD/Asperges boy needs it to just think straight some days... I am just lucky when he wants to open his mouth he could tell the doctor and his medication nurse exactly how it effects him. He asked his nurse for a dictionary and showed her his nightmare of writing a essay.. She was shocked and will be efter his school for more support.. Since the last visit a social worker in special needs department has a very red ear and will be breathing down the school he goes to do to better supporting my son,...
