Children's Services and the ADD Parent.

I'm 39, Children's Services has my kids spread all over 2 counties and they're running out of time and patience. If I don't show improvement in the next 6 months, they go up for adoption. Their concerns? Poor housekeeping, spending too much time at the computer and inconsistent parenting. In reading these posts, I realize I've at least found other people like me, how do I get Children's Services, (and a judge) to believe that I am changing but I don't plan to do the things I do? I think my wife may have ADD too. Our house can get pretty bad.

To top it off, our 11yr old has ADHD. We call him our little energizer bunny. The 14 yr old has ADD, I think. He's been diagnosed with bi-polarism and borderline personality disorders. The social worker and the doctor that did the profile on him suggest sending him to a group home and that he may never live at home again. The other 3 are just normal kids, so far. Children's Services wants to send the 11 yr old and his 8yr old sister to the same doctor for diagnosis. We think they're fishing.

So you can see I have real worries to go with my own created ones. I'm on ritalin, but it's controlled by my family doctor. I don't think he knows much about ADD treatment. Any and all advice would be nice!

Take Control

Hi there:

I think it's critical that you take control of your treatment and seek out a doctor who specializes in ADHD and who can make sure you're getting the medication you need. You should also look into alternative treatments for the whole family including nutrition, exercise, and green time - these can all benefit children a great deal and demonstrate that you are working very hard to regain control for you and your children.

Best of luck, Anni

Solutions

Check to see if you can access any services through Mental Health. A valuable assest is a Wraparound Program that many counties in the USA have now. There you can have a family specialist to act as a mentor for your children, as well as a therapist and parent partner. The parent partner has had kids in the system and is an invaluable resource to parents in many ways. All the best, Joseph

An update.

Well, the 8 yr old is a normal kid so far. My 11 yr old has been diagnosed with asperger's as well as ADHD. My oldest is no longer headed for a group home but might not come home for a while. Re-unification of my family seems to be progressing. I still have reservations about trusting the system though. I live in Canada.

It's been a challenge to learn about asperger's. ADD isn't helping in the search, either. But my kids are worth it.
