How do I get my 13 year old to read when he has ADD and a learning disability? |

Reading
Does the child have younger siblings? Have your 13-yr. old read to them each nite. It doesn't matter what the child is reading, just that reading is being done. I used to have my now 16-yr-old son read his video games (pokemon) to me as we would ride in the car. He would read street signs, he even found a book of Walt Whitman poems and started reading those to me in the car. Didn't last a long time, but wow, I thought that was pretty neat. He doesn't read as much now, but when he does, he goes with it. I try to read with him if it is homework when he lets me. Somtimes just hearing something read to them helps ADHD kids understand. It's almost like music, sometimes you hear the music but don't hear the lyrics and when you actually get past the music and listen to the lyrics, you learn what the song is really about. Good or bad. That's the issue with a lot of rap. Parents many times don't know what is really being said, just that they don't like the 'bad' language coming out. And I don't mean 'gangsta rap' stuff. Cause that is pretty much banned in my house. the biggest issue is finding what your child likes, whether it is cars, poems, animals, whatever. The library is a great place to find lots of diferent ideas. Homework is hard, and boring. I know, cause I've been reading some of my son's work. Seems like they could get better authors to write history books, or teachers could select novels that the young people like instead of college level books that NO ONE likes and would never read of their own volition. Oh well, we all must suffer some I guess. English teachers, please read the last 2 sentences! Give my child something he likes to read and he will read it. Give him something that even I, who reads a lot, am not able to read and you won't get much of anything. Good luck.

Irlen Syndrome
Just wondering if you son is struggling with reading. My daughter couldn't read at the beginning of grade 5 and by the end of grade 5 was reading mythological novels by Rick Roridan. She now loves reading. You may want to look into Irlen Syndrome which is what my daughter was diagnosed with. |

My son is 10yrs old and is barely reading
Hello everyone, Can anyone give me some tips for reading for my son, I mean this has been a up hill battle for the both of us. And now that he is ten years old he is aware that he is not reading like his peers. I constantly reassure him that he will read and we study together. He really wants to read, but what troubles me is that he substuties, for instance he will remembers colors, shapes and sounds to identify a word or phrases. I would just like for him to be able to read, and take care of his self. |
