Sharing ADD Therapy Experiences

Does anyone that goes to some kind of therapy for their ADD have feedback on their experiences they'd share?.....I am wondering, I've been put on meds for ADD but have yet to get therapy for it. I've gone to a psychologist in the past but felt like I was paying $20 for someone to listen to me talk for an hour. I am sure the ADD oriented therapy is a different story. Can anyone (adults w/ ADD) tell me what kind of things they went through in therapy and if they were helpful and how? Thanks!

ADHD Coaching

Hi there:

Welcome to the ADDitude forums! I don't have any personal experiences to share about therapy, but I can pass along some resources that might help. First, you might look into hiring an ADHD Coach rather than a therapist - it really depends on what you're trying to accomplish, but certainly it's worth at least investigating coaching as an alternative or a supplement to therapy...

1. ADDitude has an archive of success stories from ADHD adults who benefited from therapy and/or coaching - many of them are quite informative and inspirational

2. These ADHD Coaching articles may also help you determine which service will work best for you

3. Finally, the ADDitude Directory may help you find some good caregivers

I hope this helps!

My experience with ADD therapy

I would encourage you to seek out counseling. A good counselor will help you to identify areas where you struggle and find ways to cope with it. That is a simple way of describing what a "life coach" can do to help. I went to a psychologist whose main focus was helping people with ADHD. He has ADHD himself, with children who have ADHD, so he has a pretty good understanding of the challenges, and ways of dealing with the challenges. He was considering becoming a "life coach".

With mental health issues, it is usually most beneficial to receive counseling as well as medication. Studies indicate that having both is more fruitful than either one alone.
