Need Some Direction...Next Steps?

Hi All,

I have had ADD or ADHD for as long as I can remember but like most adults, didn't have a name for it and went through life as an intelligent 'underachiever' along with all the other problems.

I was diagnosed by my family doctor a few years ago but did not pursue any treatment or meds at that time. I quit smoking a couple of years ago however and my symptoms have appeared to have increased since doing so and I (and certainly my wife) am more aware of their existence now and how they affect my daily life. Now 43, I recently visited my doctor who suggested I think about meds. Unfortunately, I live in Toronto where there are apparently only two specialists who deal with adult ADD/ADHD. My doctor told me getting an appointment for specific diagnosis/treatment is really hard in this city. I said I would go away and do some research and go back and see my doctor once I had gained more knowledge. Obviously the internet has helped greatly but I do not want to 'self diagnose' too much.

From what I can gather, I have 'typical' ADHD symptoms; easily distracted, can't keep still (hyperactive), daydream a lot, can't get through a magazine article or book unless its REALLY interesting, not a good listener, however I can be very organized and hyperfocused on certain things to the point of OCD type behavior (cleaning the house, putting things away), but put a large project in front of me to do at work and I 'blank' out and/or lose interest. It is also very hard for me not to interrupt during conversations or business meetings. Based on what I've read by ADD 'expert' Dr Amen, it would appear I have something along the lines of what he calls "Overfocused - ADD' but clearly with some of the 'classic' ADD/HD symptoms.

I now feel a bit confused as to what my 'next steps' should be especially as seeing someone in Toronto is difficult. How much can my doctor help? Is cognitive behavioral therapy useful? Can anyone in Toronto area shed some light?

Much appreciated and hope yo managed to read this without getting bored...sorry.

ADD/ADHD assessment in Toronto

I just finished assessment - but the specialist is in Barrie. The Two I knew of in Toronto, I ruled one out on personal bias, and the other no longer does adult assessments.

Ask your doctor (gp) for a referral to Dr. Bilkey, he's good, and the appts can be dones within a fairly short period of time (my appts were over a longer period due to other committments) but the first appt is normally followed a week later by another, possibly a third. You will need a "collateral historian", a good friend or family member who can verify your history. ADDers are notoriously bad with acutarcy when it comes to their own history.

You're welcomed to post a private message to me and I'll provide more details.

ADHD Treatment Options

Hi there:

Certainly, ADHD medication is not your only option for treating / managing your attention deficit symptoms. Though I would advise trying to get on the waiting list for an ADHD specialist, there are some non-drug therapies that you can try in the meantime.

ADDitude recently released a free booklet all about Alternative ADHD Treatments that explains neurofeedback, omega-3 fatty acids, behavior therapy, diet, exercise, etc. in depth.

You might also want to read one of our most popular articles: You've Got Adult ADHD -- Help Is Here!

I hope this helps!

diagnosis/treatment in the GTA...

Hi, I'd be interested to hear your progress since I am also in the Toronto area (Durham region) and have yet to get a diagnosis. I've been told by my partner not to expect much. I have a psychiatrist now, but I've only just started seeing him and I can only see him once a month, so I'm not sure if he's had much experience with ADD. I'm wondering if there are options out there for me, or should I just settle with self-diagnosis if I can't hope for much in the way of treatment outside getting prescriptions written.

If you'd rather reply via PM, please do. Good luck.
