Elementary School Finacial Aid

My son was diagnosed with ADHD 3 years ago. He was 5 and in kindergarten. He started having difficulty in school immediately.. He has more problems with focus and impulsivity which made it really difficult for him to stay on track in school. That along with the large class size of 28 students and limited resources, and negative affects on his self-esteem, we decided to take him out of the public schools... He was having difficulty learning to read, write and suffered with much anxiety when trying to do so, we decided to take him out of the public schools half way through first grade. He is now attending a private school and entering 3rd grade. He has 12 children in his class and there is a very individualized approach to teaching. We have seen a dramatic difference in my son's academic abilities and with his confidence. He is reading fluently and his reading comprehension is great. He excels at almost all subjects. It is the one on one individual approach that is essential for children with ADHD to be successful in school. Public schools do not have the resources to do so and it is understandable with so many children, some with other disabilities, non- English speaking students, and so on. I do not blame the teachers. It is common knowledge and statistical data shows, children do better in smaller class sizes with a more individualized approach. You can't teach the same way to every child because every child is unique. Half the children will do just fine, while the other half will get lost. I don't want my son to be that half that gets lost in the shuffle. I find that they understand that in this private school and that's why the children do so well. My real dilemma is paying for his private school education. My husband I really struggle to afford this school and I'm afraid may not be able pay for his education. Has anyone had this issue and does anyone know if there's financial aid available to students with disabilities or some resources in this regard???????

We are going through exactly the same thing - although we haven't actually pulled my second grader from public school yet. It is getting worse and worse, the older he gets, and second grade is near impossible. Once again, I'm researching private schools. Once again, I'm finding we can't possibly afford them.

The public school is simply not a good fit for an ADHD kid - or even one who's overly active! We don't have any charter schools in our area - maybe you do? - and I consider homeschooling every day - only to realize how much work it would be to do that! If you get any responses, or have any ideas, I would love to hear about them. We are losing it here, too, and desperate.
