Vyvanese and Concerta

My daugther is 15 and was on Concerta for years. We took a break during the summer break and tried to get her back on it. Now when she takes it she is depressed and withdrawn and fights constantly with her brother. They tried a lower dose but still the same. They switched her to Vyvanese and the lowest dose available. She because violent and irritable. Now she is off all together and I am afraid she will start struggling thru school. My son is 13 and he has been on Concerta for years also. The doctor decided to try Vyvanese with him also and the same side effects of violent, grouchy and confrontational behavior. Pulled him off and put back on Concerta. Will not change him again but need to find something for my daughter.

Side Effects

Hi nsgblx:

ADDitude actually has some great articles online about adjusting ADHD medications because of side effects.

ADHD Medications: Say No to Side Effects is a particularly popular article. And here's another that answers parents' top questions about ADHD medications.

Here are some specific questions about Concerta answered by Dr. Larry Silver as well.

I hope that helps!

Depression is aggrevated by ADD medication

I am not an expert but trust the psychiatrist my son is seeing. He will not give him medication yet because his is suffering from depression. Background: He is now 20 and just recently diagnosed - an A student in high school at first - down to A's, B's and C's by graduation, went to college and flunked out. He is brillant and that masked his ADD. Being so smart and failing is tough....of course he never told us of his frustrations until it became a crisis. He has been on anti-depressents for 8 weeks and his combative ways have mostly gone by the way side! He generally a good kid. I would suggest that you have your daughter tested for depression. I rember being 15 (even though I try to forget sometimes) hormones, peer pressure, etc. plus ADD .....

Good Luck
