Help! Explaining ADHD for a School Project

My 10 yr old grandson is determined to do a science project on adhd, He has been waiting two yrs till 5th grade and planning, he has it all worked out in his head and we discuss it often, 5th grade has finally arrived and I do not want to discourge him but I have issuses with his project (It will break his heart to fail at this) Okay he wants everyone to understand how hard it is to concentrate. His experiment is to test 20 peoples memory with 8 random words with a fast speed stobe light (he said this reprsents how fast the synapes in his brain fires while playing a tape with various noises such as glass breaking, dogs barking, people talking, just all kinds of distractions give his subject a minute or 2 to recall the words then a few days later turn the strobe to slowest setting and play low classical music to reprsent the way a non adhd brain can remember the same random words. Great experiment! My problem is scientifcly does this represent adhd? Can a stobe light really represent the way the brain nerves receive transmission and is that and acurate representation? His doctor in the begining explained adhd as his thought process flashing rapidly and normal brain flashing slowly (where he got the idea of lights flashing) Since there is so much conterversy about adhd can it be proven in a way that a science project will not be rejected ? He and I have worked long and hard to get him where he is at school all A"s and 4B"s last year all around great kid big differnce form 3 yrs ago Any ideas to to help him explain this to where pepole who doesn't know about adhd can grasp the stuggles would be helpful. I"ve read many many articles and studies but haven"t found much that a 10 yr lod can follow long enough to get the info needed and he must do the recearch himself so anyone know any simplified info please let me know thanks gp

ADHD Explanation

Hello gp:

I hope you saw our previous ADHD forum comments" about your grandson's school project. His idea of flashing the strobe and playing loud music is a good one because it replicates the overwhelming distractions that ADHD individuals face on a daily basis. This is not necessarily a representation of brain activity, per se, but it is a good "ADHD situation for non-ADDers to experience.

If he had the equipment, your grandson could also measure each participant's pulse to show that heart-rate (and therefore anxiety) rises in those people who are watching the strobe and listening to the loud music.

Why ADDers feel this way is a sort of a separate question that goes back, scientifically, to the neurotransmitters in the brains. For more information about the ADHD brain, check out the ADHD Information section of this web site.

Hope that helps!
