ROTC for ADD Kids

My ADD son is currently in Junior ROTC in high school. He is in the process of applying for a ROTC scholarship to college. Does anyone know if his diagnosis and use of medication will disqualify him for this scholarship?

Rotc scholarship

My son is a Senior and has had ADHD for 9 years. He has taken medication most of that time. We knew that my son could not be on active duty on medication for ADHD. The regulation is that an enlisting soldier must be off medication for 12 months before signing a contract. That raised the question of 12 months before going active duty or 12 months before accepting the scholarship? He stopped taking his meds at the end of his junior year, giving him 12 months before going to college. He has completed all the ROTC scholarship process and received a letter stating that we need to get him a medical waver because of the ADHD and his medication. Evidently, he should have stopped the medication 12 months before taking the physical required for the scholarship. This week we are getting documentation from his counselor that he has never had any academic accommodations, no IEPs, no 504s and no behavior problems. I asked his JROTC instructor to write a letter along the same lines. The answer is ADHD does not disqualify anyone from receiving an ROTC scholarship, but the student must be able to succeed academicly without medication. Start the process early so you have time to complete any follow up appointments and paperwork. If your high school doesn't have JROTC, find a local college that does and ask the ROTC cadre for help with the process. We are a 20 year Army active duty family (ROTC graduate) and we needed help. I hope this is helpful.
