Kumon
Hi Lynn,
My son (just turned 8, going into 2nd grade) started Kumon when he was 5 and in PreK. He has ADHD and is currently on Daytrana. We began Kumon because we wanted him to not only learn reading and math, but to give him practice sitting down and doing work. It is structured and we wanted that for him. He is still doing Kumon and is above grade level. He didn't take meds when starting Kumon. He was in "junior Kumon" at that time and was in a back room with an instructor. It was hard to get him to do the worksheets at home and he did OK at the center. Once he started meds, it was much easier for him to sit down and do the work. We didn't have to scream for him to sit down and do his Kumon. He is still on meds and doing well in Kumon. It does take him longer than the usual student to finish. Ideally you need to finish your worksheets in a specific time frame. He cannot do this. I did inform the center about his ADHD. They do put him in the front of the room and have made other accommodations such as giving him as much time as he needs to complete work, cutting down on the number of pages to complete each day, etc. My advice would be to speak to the Kumon center about your child's ADHD and have them work with you. Don't take a break for an extended period of time from Kumon once you begin. It will be hard to get your child back into the routine. Do what work you can at home. My son does not do Kumon everyday because some days he is too tired or the meds are wearing off (mainly during the school year). It is impossible to expect that he do the work on those days.
