Brain pictures

Daniel Amen, who has written several books on the brain, including one specifically on ADHD, has some great pictures. He specializes in neuroimaging SPECT scans of the brain, particularly of individuals with various disorders and substance abuse. He has pictures of the brain's activity of individuals with ADHD, including an ADHD brain at rest, concentrating, and with and without stimulant medication. He has a website that includes a section called "The Brain Place" where he has an atlas of pictures, in which you can select the one for ADHD. I will give you the website location where I found the pictures. Hopefully, this will take you directly there, but keep in mind I am not the most computer saavy person so I can't guarantee it will work. http://amenclinics.com/bp/atlas/ch12.php If that doesn't take you right there then you will have to go to www.amenclinics.com and go to the Brain Place and then the Atlas for ADHD.

Although the work he does is somewhat controversial and not completely accepted in the scientific community (not enough research to support some of his conclusions and treatments), the neuroimaging techniques do show us a lot about the brain and its activity and with future research, development and technology, they may one day be an important part of diagnosing and treating various disorders. They are helpful but not definitive at this point in time.

I had ordered a poster that was mentioned in one of his books that compares a healthy brain to brains of individuals who had abused various drugs. Again, the pictures are not differences in the physical brain but in the brain activity. It is very impressive.

I would also suggest checking www.chadd.org for some good information on ADHD. They have some good Fact Sheets on ADHD that explain the disorder, dispel some of the commonly held myths regarding ADHD, and other information. The information is concise and should be easy for 10 year olds to understand.

I think that is great that your son is doing his project on ADHD. It's a great tool for helping others to understand ADHD better. Good luck with the project!!

Great Idea

Hi:

How wonderful that your grandson is preparing an ADHD report for his classmates - will it coincide with ADD Awareness Week in September?

The ADDitude web site has a few sections just overflowing with basic, easy-to-understand information about ADHD that I would recommend:

Explaining the ADHD Diagnosis to Your Child: http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/911.html

ADD Basics: http://www.additudemag.com/topic/adhd-information/about-adhd.html

Children's Books About ADHD: http://www.additudemag.com/resources/bookreviewsall.html?channel=Children

I hope this helps!
