Post-Secondary Transition and COLLEGE SUCCESS!

In addition to being the parent of an LD/ADD adult son who completed college successfully, I served as the sole Learning Specialist at our local community college from 1993-2006. In that capacity, I saw many students with LD/ADD enter college not only ill-prepared for its unique challenges but also lacking navigational skills that would increase their chances of success. As a result, many capable students did poorly and either dropped out or failed.

To address these issues PROactively, I wrote a course for special education high school students and their parents entitled CONQUER COLLEGE WITH LD. I taught it to a packed audience from January-March 2008 to excellent reviews, many calling it a "must-take" course. I will be teaching it again for 10 consecutive Sat. mornings beginning 9/20 at Gwynedd Mercy College. It covers topics such as--- how to prepare for transition in high school, finding the right college fit, college decisions that bode for success, effective habits, self-advocacy skills, vital college study skills, etc. Coming to this field from dual perspectives has given me a distinct advantage; I would say I have learned as much professionally as personally. I am passionate about the success of LD students; we are losing far too many creative minds with potential to make great contributions.

If you are in the Philadelphia area and are interested in course details, please e-mail me at TransitionSuccess@gmail.com. In addition, I am making my course materials available to those who cannot attend due to distance. E-mail me for more information, and I will send you "25 Rules for College Success for Students with Learning DIsabilities" which I compiled from mistakes students made most frequently.

College IS possible for many of our students, but success is not achieved accidentally. It is a result of carefully orchestrated decisions, strategies, and skills that set our students up for success and empower them!
