Anybody else got a kid who wanders off without telling you all the time?

My 9 yr. old has been doing this since he was old enough to walk. When we are in public, he likes to walk way ahead of us and we have to continually remind him to stay close or "wait up."

If our dog escapes out of the yard, he chases him and last week ended up 1/2 mile from home, and was gone for an hour, even as it got dark out. We almost called the police!

I posted this question on Yahoo Answers & got some really ignorant responses...obviously by people who think that the traditional disciplinary actions work well for kids with ADHD.

He's not misbehaving, he just can't seem to stop to think before he takes off. I'm sure you all know about the not-thinking part!

I don't want to put him on a kid leash, and I don't want to just "punish" him. Does anybody have any INNOVATIVE ideas on how I can successfully teach him to stay close and what might help this lesson stick?

Thanks, Debi
