Does anyone here take their children off the medication over the summer? Is it important to stay on it consistently? kim

med break

I don't take my kids off during the summer, because then they'd never sit through dinner, or be able to get ready for church, or any other place we're going to. Besides, all their fidgeting, humming, etc...would probably get on my nerves too much since they are with me all day long. LOL.

If the meds don't have any negative side effects, I say why not keep them on it because they thrive on routine, and you'd have to start the routine of taking the meds every morning all over again once school rolls around.

I don't believe they HAVE to stay on them, because most ADD meds don't stay in your system that long. They wear off by the end of the day. And I think they should still be effective if you stop and then start up again.

Besides, as someone with the condition myself, I like the way I feel so much better when I'm on the meds. I'm not constantly restless and bored out of my mind. I bet your child feels that way too.

Hope this helps, Debi

ADHD Drug 'Holiday'

Hi there:

Here is a short, great article from Dr. Larry Silver about considerations every parent should make before taking their child off ADHD medication for a short or long time period: http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/1698.html

In short, he says that if taking your child off his medication will put him at risk for behaviors that will get him in trouble (thereby possibly denting his self-esteem), then you should not take the drug holiday. And, remember, consistency is soooo key for ADHD kids.

Here are some other resources you might find helpful: http://www.additudemag.com/search/keyword/Holidays%20from%20ADHD%20Drugs.html

Best of luck!

Med Break

Always consult with your doctor before making any changes in medication. Each person is unique as to their need for and reactions to medication. All the best, Joseph

medication break

Hi - My son has the inattentive type ADD and takes 18mg Strattera during the school year. I do take him off for the summer, because there are some negative side effects of the drug which he enjoys a break from. Also, his growth stalls out while on the med, and he shoots up while off.

In our case, his symptoms of ADD are most problematic at school so this works for us. His doctor is aware and gave his blessing. Since my son is not particularly impulsive in the way that would be a danger to himself, it's a good fit. I read the article Anni is refering to and I would keep him on if I thought his symptoms would make him a danger to himself or others, or if they symptoms hindered his ability to function adequately. I know other mom's of ADDer's that keep their kids on for the same reason as the first post, and it works for them.

It truly boils down to your child's needs and the consequences of doing either decision, and which is worse. Recongnize that you're making the best decision you can for your child, change it if new information comes in, and forgive yourself any perceived mistakes. We're all doing our best with what we've got! Good luck.

Not on weekends

My son is 8 and he's on Concerta 18mg during the week only, his doctor believes in "drug holidays" & since he's not in any orgnized sports I have no problem with doing this. So far it's working great, but we're still early days, still his teachers are thrilled & I have my "normal" son on weekends, so I'm happy.
