Trouble Sleeping with Adderall XR

I was just diagnosed with ADHD and am on a trial dose of Adderall XR 15mg. I am also taking 300mg of Effexor for Anxiety/Depression. That might change now that I've been diagnosed with ADHD. It appears that a lot of my Anxiety/Depression issues were actually ADHD issues. Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone has had difficulty sleeping while taking the Adderall. I've heard trouble sleeping is one of the main side effects. Any suggestions on how to avoid this side effect, or how to deal with it? Thank you in advance.

Shannon

Sleeping with Adderall XR

My 7 year old son started on 10MG about 3-4 months ago. When he first started he couldn't get to sleep but once he was asleep he slept well. It did get better with time. Good luck!

Sleep Help

Hi Shannon:

Congratulations on the diagnosis and on starting a treatment plan for your ADHD! You're right that sleep problems do sometimes accompany ADHD meds, but some adults with ADHD actually find that they sleep better once they receive a definitive diagnosis and start treatment. It's difficult to predict. But here are some great ADDitude articles that offer tips for combatting common sleep problems associated with ADHD...

I hope this helps!

I take Adderall XR 15 mg also

I just started taking Adderall XR; I was taking regular Adderall. I find that I have a hard time going to sleep; but then I sleep well, but sometimes wake up a bit early.

I also notice that my heart seems to beat faster.

I have depression, also and have been on Zoloft 50 for a year - my doctor says I may be able to go off the antidepressant eventually now that I've been diagnosed with ADHD.

It sure is a journey - but aren't you glad you were finally diagnosed? We are some of the lucky ones.

trouble sleeping Adderall XR

I have taken zoloft 100 mg and adderall XR for about 2 years now and I am a different person, I cannot imagine life with out them at this point, I also had trouble sleeping in the at first, What I do is take the both very earlie in the morning before work at 7am, if on the weekends i sleep in I do not take it, If i take adderall anytime late morning I cannot sleep, there are times that i take tylenol pm if i can't sleep from the adderall. hope this helps.

Story of my life

I variate my dosage depending on the stress levels of my future day (I know that's not healthy). When I take 40mg of Adderall instant release, it somehow manages to keep me up until the early morning. However, when I take 20mg, I don't usually feel same rush of focus I get with the higher dosage.

The Adderall XR that your taking is able to release controlled amounts of the "rush" for several hours, and most likely effects your sleep. In my opinion, the XR is more effective, but maybe an even lower dosage would help you out. Something else to look out for, if you're drinking caffeine throughout the day, it tends to increase the effects.

The mix of medications is also a suspect. Your anti-depression medication is an "upper", that stimulates you physically and mentally. The Adderall performs a similar task. Talk to your doctor/psych about how the medication is affecting your sleep and they will most likely have a solution. There is a good chance my psych will be switching me to a similar medication (starts with a V or something) that will supposedly calm down my late night rambunctiousness. Being 17 is rough enough, but it's even worse when you can't sleep.
