Focalin XR

I just got diagnosed w/ADD Monday and started taking Focalin XR Tuesday. Today is day 2 and I still don't feel any different. I didn't think that it had to build up in your system, I thought it was gone once it wore off. But I don't feel any different. They have me on 5 mg./day to start. After a week if I don't feel anything, they said take 10 mg/day. Anyone have any thoughts?

My son is currently taking Focalin XR. He is 7 y/o and he is on 10 mg. You are probably on too low of a dose. I would contact your Dr and ask him to boost you up. Usuallly, from what I have read, adults are on 20 mg. Hope this helps you. You may want to look at the web site for Focalin: www.FocalinXR.com.

Thanks for responding Laurie. The doc told me that it goes by metabolism, not volume. My DS takes 15 mg. and he's 5 y/o! The doc said a 5 y/o hyperactive boy has a faster metabolism than a 40 y/o inattentive woman, so he would need more.

He said to try the 5 mg. for a week and if it didn't do anything, up it to 10 mg. for a week, and so on. I just don't understand why I need to wait a week, if it doesn't build up in your system, know what I mean?

Sorry it took me so long to respond...but maybe he/she is having you wait to see how your body reacts. I can't tell you that I know for sure, sorry. I knew right away when my DS starting taking the meds that it was too low and that he needed more. I sure hope you find what is right for you. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Addmom,

One of the reasons they have you start low and gradually increase the dose is there is less of a response to side effects, if you happen to have any problems with them. Some doctors might have started you out at a little higher dose unless you are sensitive to medicication or side effects. Be glad you only have to wait a week. I know some doctors that make you wait a month before an increase.

I hope the increase makes a difference for you.

Elaine

Well, I lasted 3 days on the 5 mg., then started taking the 10 mg. LOL! So much for patience. :) I dont feel any different, don't have that "the fog has lifted" feeling that I keep reading about. The only thing I have noticed is that I have been kind of snippy and short on patience the last few days. But I'm not sure if that's because I have AF right now, or the med, or what? It's like when I don't take my Buderprion (sp?).
