Newly Diagnosed!

I went to a Neurologist Monday afternoon and left with an Rx for Focalin XR. I filled out a rating scale and he said there at 0 other 40 y/o women as inattentive & impulsive as me! LOL! I will be 40 this month and my 5 y/o was diagnosed when he was 4. He's the hyperactive type. He takes Focalin XR 15 mg. The doc was going to try Concerta, because it's been around the longest, is usually affordable and most insurances cover it, but then decided that genetically speaking, it would make sense to try Focalin XR, since DS does well on it.

So he's starting me on 5 mg. Said to take it for a week and if I don't feel different, up it to 10 mg. for a week. If that doesn't help, call and he up it to 15 mg. I started the meds yesterday and didn't feel any different. I don't think it needs time to build up in your system, right? Because it's out once it wears off, right? I dunno. I'm hoping it "kick's in" soon though, because I've got a lot to get organized! LOL!

Welcome!

Hi ADDMom:

Congrats on getting a diagnosis and starting your treatment for ADHD - it really is never too late! It sounds like your doctor has a great treatment plan for you: starting with a low dosage and gradually increasing it each week if you need it. It's possible that you may not feel any different with just 5 mg, or even 10 mg, but it's much safer and easier on your system to take things slowly. So try to have some patience with the process, and begin looking forward to more focus, more organization, and more fun.
