Anyone Have Stammering Issues?

My 12 year-old ADHD son has had a stammering problem that started in the 2nd grade. He had speech for 2 yrs and improved. We moved and things were OK but now as he is reaching puberty he is stammering more. He says he doesn't seem to have a problem in public situations like school or family get togethers, but just at home. Just wondering if anyone else has had problems like this and if there is anything I can do at home to work with him to improve. We are going to get an IEP this fall when school starts for speech but didn't know if there was something we could do in the mean time. Any ideas?

Stammering

Hello:

Welcome to the ADDitude forums! I have heard of stuttering as a side effect of some medications (namely Wellbutrin), but if your son has been on ADD medications for a while the stammering is more likely a separate issue. It sounds like your on the right path with a new IEP, but I would also consider revisiting a speech-language therapist as well... it certainly can't hurt, and will likely give your son a boost of self-esteem during those otherwise tough teen years.

I hope this helps!
