Can't Get Myself to Start Course Work

I'm in college and I just got re-diagnosed with ADHD inattentive type. I was diagnosed at 7 and taken off meds at 10 and have been untreated until now. My grades are poor. Whenever I have to start course work or get myself to study, I find it very hard to get started. It's like diving into a pool of 50 degree water, its hard to jump. Thats what its like. I turn on the TV or go on the internet first and never get started. Anyone know how to beat this or how to get started? I don't start academic coaching and counseling for ADHD at school until fall. I am in the process of finding medication too. Any other advice from anyone would be great.

Procrastination

Hi there:

Are you currently on medication for your recently re-diagnosed ADD? If not, that's an obvious place to begin... finding a prescription that can help you motivate to get started and focus on completing work. In the meantime, you might want to find some good pointers here...

Getting started ...

I feel your pain. What works for me is to talk to a friend or classmate about the subject matter. Doing this helps get my interest in the class up, which in turn helps me get motivated to do the work.

One hour of junk

For a recent paper that I've been struggling to get going, my therapist suggested scheduling 1 hour to write complete and utter junk -- don't think, don't edit, just write. It actually worked pretty well (both hours turned into 2 hours each, and now at least I have something to go off of other than ideas floating around hopelessly inside my brain, fighting to come out) -- even if it ends up just being isolated progress, it's still progress

What works for me

I am the same so I have tricked my brain into starting. For me, how I do something is just as important as what I do. I love the internet so what I do is look up something on the internet that is rekated to what I need to do. Then I have a quick look at the papers, then back to the internet. What tends to happen is that the hyper-focus of ADD eventually takes over and I find myslf 5 hours later totally absorbed. Also consider the time of day. I tend to have wildly original thoughts at night, am productive (e.g. editing and writing up notes from the night before) in the morning and have had to accept that my brain is mush in the afternoon. I have carried this through to work where I make all of my appointments in the afternoon to take advantage of the morning productivity.
