HELP Doctor, Daughter

Hello all!

A tad bit about me so hopefully this makes sense. I am a 28-yr-old single mom with ADHD. My daughter was just diagnosed with ADHD as well. My son has not been diagnosed. I have been on medication to treat my ADHD symptoms since I was first diagnosed back in about 2003. Anyhow, my primary doctor who was treating me moved away and the doctor who took over his practice refuses to treat me. I have been off of my meds now for a month and needless to say I'm losing everything. I have lost my home, am on the edge of losing my job, and can't handle anything. My daughter, who is 8 yrs old, is about to drive me farther up the wall than I do myself. I am currently looking for a new doctor. Hopefully one who either specializes in ADHD or one who will at least treat it. I am hoping that someone will have some ideas to help me. I live in Redding, CA.

Thanks

Help with doctor

ADHDMOM2BECKY,

I'm sorry that your new doctor refuses to treat you. Unfortunately, some doctors are not very knowledgeable or comfortable with treating ADHD. Your children's pediatrician may be able to recommend someone you can see for treatment of your ADHD. I would also go to www.chadd.org. they may have a support group in your area and you can meet others who may be able to give you referrals and ideas for your particular area.

If you personally know any doctors or nurses, they may know of someone who treats adult ADHD. your insurance company may also know someone. Ask around.

I hope you are able to find someone who is able to help you soon. you shouldn't have to suffer because of one doctor's refusal to treat you. Imagine if your doctor said he refused to treat you for your diabetes or your asthma, if you had either of those symptoms. If he feels incompetent in that area, he should refer you to someone else. If he doesn't "believe" in ADHD or treatment, then he is only showing his own ignorance since ADHD has been documented and established by scientific studies and research.

Good luck,

Elaine

ADHD Doctor

Hello there:

It's truly a crime that this new doctor will not treat your ADHD. You shouldn't have to suffer one more day without treatment. I used the ADDitude Directory to find a doctor in Redding who reports to specialize in ADHD: Aravind K Pai MD. I can't personally vouch for him and neither can ADDitude (we've never met him), but certainly it's worth a phone call to see if he does treat ADHD adults and is accepting new patients.

In the meantime, you should refer your current doctor to this page for some ADHD truths: http://www.additudemag.com/resources/addvocacy.html

Good luck!
