How I Found Out I have ADHD

It's been a long journey looking back. I have 7-year-old boy and I had a tough time dealing with him because of his lack of motivation, scared to try new things, disorganized, spaces out often, hardly ever participate in classes...every time I peek through his class he seems always doing things by him self. Considering he is 7 years old his speech is low -- 5 years old. I figure from the time he was born he had a Spanish speaking nanny and we were too busy to spend time with him and really never had a conversation with him, that's why he was having problem with the speech. Six months ago I got a letter from his 1st teacher advising that we should take him to get evaluated cause he is falling behind and he really does not what to do. We took him to several doctors and found out he has ADHD -- inattentive disorder. With possibility having a speech disorder. Me and my wife were a little shocked but not surprised. I was reading through the data of his report and I found out I have similar symptoms as the report described about my son, except the part about the speech problem. As I remember from my childhood years I have always been told that I was smart, but I do not give full effort on most things I do. I just do as much as I need to do and quit. This is including sports, work, hobbies, bills, chores.etc.. I always wait till the last minute to finish things, not following thorough what needs to be followed. Of course I thought I was just plain lazy or just needed motivation or simple excuses that I tell my self why its not done yet. Interrupting others during the conversation cause I get bored. All these symptoms are almost identical to my boy. One day I was driving I heard an ad about PRI and they were doing a research on Adult ADHD and looking for a test client. I figure hey why not, it's free and maybe I could get a confirmation that I don't have ADHD or ADD. It took him 15 minutes to tell me I have ADHD inattentive disorder. I was not shocked, but it made me little depressed that I could have found out what was wrong with me sooner. Maybe my life would be different. I wanted to participate in the research, but they said since I don't have any medical history so I can not participate. He gave me some advice, told me to try some natural supplement to see it helps. If not, he can recommend me to see a doctor. I have very mild ADHD and it can be cured with proper diets and supplements.

It's only been less than a month since I found out I have ADHD so I am researching and taking a supplements. I don't know it's helping but I came to understand lot more about my kid and how I should treat him. My kid and I getting along much better and I see slight improvement in him. He is enrolled in special classes to help him on his speech and we are trying to make him feel normal as we possibly can.

I'd like to take a next step for myself but I really don't know where to go and who to ask. I don't have a family doctor nor have I ever been in the hospital or seen a doctor for at least 30 years. I kinda feel like browsing through my life right now. I am still procrastinating, lack of energy, browsing through websites without actually wanting anything. Usually wasting time a lot. I know I have tons of things to do but I am not doing it. Someone please help!

Hi - I didn't read through your whole message; but have you decided to try one of the meds for ADHD?

I am so glad that you are your child and getting closer; he needs his dad....and you need him!

God bless!

Next step

Scott,

I would ask the doctor who diagnosed your son if he could recommend someone who would be able to diagnose and treat adult ADHD. Your ADHD may not be as mild as you think. When it comes to inattentive ADHD, behavior is not usually a problem so these individuals may be labelled as mild because some of the issues are not as noticeable. Individuals with inattentive ADHD usually have more problems with working memory, the ability to keep a lot of different steps in mind at the same time. Mental processing is slower and underarousal or lack of motivation is common also. I was just diagnosed in April at the age of 47 (my anxiety, compensating skills and higher IQ helped to mask my symptoms). When I started taking the medication, I was amazed at the difference it made. I am able to think more clearly, organize my thoughts better, prioritize my work more efficiently and my reading comprehension is much better. Things that I used to avoid doing because they required too much mental effort were not a problem anymore. I didn't realize just how much I struggled to accomplish what I did before the medication.

In the past if someone explained to me how to do something that requried a lot of steps, I had to write it down or I would forget. Now, I am able to listen to their explanation and remember all of the steps. I don't feel as "stupid". I get what others are saying much more quickly. I also feel more confident because of it.

If you can, I would also read up on adult ADD. The book, "Driven to Distraction" is a good choice. Keep in mind that some books spend more time describing the hyperactive type rather than the inattentive type.

Good luck,

Elaine
