Combination of Strattera 25mg and Concerta 18 mg

My son is 10 yrs. old and has been taking medication since the age of 4 yrs. old. He was taking 35 mgs. of Strattera for the last 3 1/2 yrs. It seemed to work well with him at home and at school. The last two months of school he was not as focused acting out in class. Being really defiant and a couple of incidents would push or hit kids for no reason. The doctor decided to increase his Strattera to 40 mgs. They couldn't really tell the difference at school and neither could I at home. So she decided to combine 18 mg Concerta along with Strattera. He's only been on this combination for about 2 1/2 weeks. In the beginning I thought wow everything is fine he seems more focused and calm. No side effects he eats, sleeps, no problems. Well that was short lived he seems more emotional then ever cries for every little thing under the sun. His defiance is over the top. I know puberty is knocking at our door and that it may play a part in this, but I don't know what to do. I'm thinking this combination of meds is not working. Any thoughts from anyone would be so greatly appreciated.

Straterra-Concerta combination

My son is also on a Straterra/Concerta combination. Concerta didn't work well enough by itself, and we added the Straterra because he couldn't tolerate higher doses of the Concerta. We're up to Concerta 27/Straterra 40. This combination seems to be working well for him, but he does get moody at times. It's not all the time, though. You might want to give it another week for him to get used to the combination dose. You also may be interested in this link about Straterra side effects http://www.strattera.ws/ I don't know what other factors there are in your son's diagnosis, so this combination may not be right for him. I took my son to a pediatric neurologist and she is the one who manages his meds -- that's the best thing I ever did. I have realized that there is no better Dr. than a neurologist to treat this kind of brain disorder, especially since brain chemistry is so individual. She is well informed about the latest and greatest research and treatments, and always knows exactly what to do and what to try next when meds don't seem to be working. Has your Dr. had your son's blood tested for liver ALT/AST levels? Straterra has also been known to increase this in some people, and I don't know if all doctors are aware of this.

I would call the Dr. that prescribed it right away and let him/her know what kind of mood swings your son is having. There may be something else they can prescribe or adjust the dose. Good luck!
