I Have Two Boys Just Diagnosed with ADHD - and Lots of Questions

My 8 year old was diagnosed in April with ADHD; he is talking 35mg of Strattera. He is doing a lot better in school, but I am still having problems with him not being able to control his anger, wanting to be the boss all the time, and getting his way? Any advice? Does Strattera really work?

My 9 year old was diagnosed at the end of May and he is on Concerta (27 mg). He is complaining of stomach ache, headache, dizziness, and a little chest pain. Are these symptoms normal when first starting the Concerta? Is Concerta a good one to take?

How do I parent better and try to get them to behave?

My daughter was put on concerta after being on just tenex for 8 months. When the heart association recommended that the heart check was done I had began noticing that when she played, ran etc. her heart would race more than normal. We went to the dr for a check up did the EKG and found that she does have a heart mumor which they tell me is normal at some point in someones life but we have stopped taking the Concerta and have not had any more complaints from her about the stomach aches, heart racing and headaches since which were a daily complaint from her. We are now trying to change her diet and control the ADHD that way, so far it seems to help. After the scare of the heart racing I really had to reconsider what I wanted to do with her to help her in school but also keep her healthy. I would talk to your doctor about changing the medications maybe.

Two boys with ADHD

Thank you for the advice. My son went to the dr yesterday and his heart was ok. His dr said the ekg we did was normal. I am going to monitor him and may need to change his medication. What diet is your child on? I would like to try it

Meds/ADHD & more

Hello, YOU first must recognize your children are extremely gifted. But you mentioned that 8 year old son is bossy and argue if he does not get his way, this is caused by a rare gene in most ADHD children called the "explorer" gene it causes them to be exceedingly indepedent and have trouble honoring the visions of others. I also have been taking Straterra for about a year and yes it does help.

Now you mentioned your 9 year son is having medical issues. Well, first you must see your physican immeaditely. He is showing just about ALL the side affect of that medication called "Concerta". The reason your children are taking different medications is due t their age. They give sronger medication to older patients. Also if not dealt with soon your son could suffer from extreme weight loss, which is a sideeffect you really should fear; even if the doctor tellls you you shouldn't.

Just in case you doubt me I was diagnosed with when I was six years old and I am now I am fifteen and am a freshman in HIGH SCHOOL , I will have had ADHD for 11 years this years. Also, I have taken both medications and still take Straterra.

That is very interesting to know. I had no idea about that gene. How do I help my 8 year old behave better and not have such huge out burts?

My 9 year old is doing better but we have an appt soon with his pediatrician so I will ask again about his medication again and see if we need to change it. Now he is not very hungry anymore but he still eats 3 meals a day.
