Loss of appetite with ADHD Medications
Hello,
We experienced the same problem with a different medication AdderallXR. With ADHD your child will qualify for a 504 plan in school. You can include in this plan that the Teacher make sure that he eats a snack and that if required the teacher or school nurse make sure that the child eats at lunch. the teacher or nurse can simply give you a not that lets you know how they are eating at school.
We ended up switching from the adderall to concerta and have not had a problem to date. Perhapse changing medications or reducing the dose may help this should be discussed with your dr as should any changes or concerns with medications and ADHD. If the child has just recently been put on the medication the side effects ususally will subside after a few weeks, but it is something to be concerned with.
My son was 9 years old and weighed 54 lbs on Adderall. We took him off the medication for the entire summer and his weight came right back. At the end of the summer he was a 70 lbs and has maintained his weight this year after changing from the adderall to the concerta.
Medications are a guessing game until you find something that works best for your child with minimal side effects. Don't be aftraid to talk to your doctor about your concerns and possible making some changes.
Good Luck.
