EKG, thyroid etc before starting meds?

Hello,

My almost 6 year old DS has just been diagnosed with ADD and dyslexia. The psychologist said that the ADD is mild and he wouldn't recommend meds if he was not having difficulty learning how to read. He found that DS' auditory memory was 1 year behind. DS tested well in all other areas. We have an appt. with DS' Dr. tomorrow afternoon to discuss meds. Obviously I don't want to do anything that will endanger DS. Should I ask for any medical tests prior to starting meds for ADD? The psychologist suggested 18 mg. of Concerta. DS has no known health problems except for some allergies. Should I worry if the Dr. doesn't feel any tests are necessary before starting Concerta? Thank you very much for any replies!

Becky

EKG before starting meds

Recently, it has been suggested that doctors may want to consider doing an EKG on an individual prior to giving them stimulant meds because of a possible unrecognized heart condition. It is not that common but it is an extra precaution. Neither of my children had EKG's and most doctors did not do an EKG in the past. I was recently diagnosed and had an EKG done and my husband had one done because he had had a heart attack in the past. If your doctor doesn't think it is necessary, it's up to you. You can request that you would prefer to have one done.

Usuallly vision and hearing are checked and sometimes they have the child evaluated by a psychologist (if you went to the pediatrician first) to look for depression or any other possible factors. I don't believe a thyroid test is usually done unless the individual was exhibiting other signs that might indicate that possibility. And they do ask that the schools test for any possible learning disabilities.

Those are the things that I am aware of. But each doctor has his or her own procedures or policies that they follow.
